Well, GovX sent me the wrong light, I thought it was smaller than I was expecting and at dinner my dad asked about battery like so I went online to check and realized I had ordered the S2R Baton 2 but received the S1R Baton 2.
Still impressed by 1,000 lumens out of such a small light when my old EDC light was longer and slightly thinner but 300 lumens.

Had some old scraps I was gonna toss in the basement since I moved in. A buddy gave me a better idea. Crudely made VTAC wall :)

I even made it so it folds in half and the feet detach for easy transport.

Got an old sporterized Mauser from my dad.
Barrel is stamped "308" and it has a cheap Simmons scope on it. I have no idea if Dad ever fired it or not. I didn't even know he had it.
I thought it might make a decent first hunting rifle for my boy, so I finally got it out to see if it was zeroed in today.
    IMG_20200105_125309.jpg
First shot was from a bag of rounds marked 7.62x51. it's the one on the left. So perfectly sideways you can tell the front and back and that it's a boat tail. Second round was a .308 Rem from an old commercial box of Winchester rounds. It's the one on the right. Wasn't too interested in firing it any more after that.
Never seen anything like it

is it a K98? Bullets tumble when it’s not contacting the lands and groves (low pressure) whether it’s a result of being undersized to what the bore diameter is or the barrel is overly worn, or a smooth bore.

Just for safety reasons I’d definitely want to go get it checked out by a smith just to get an idea of what’s going on, unless you have go/no go gauges and know how to check chamber dimensions, plus bore scope the barrel, dial bore gauge etc.

So much this! Stuff like that can do nasty things and it’s not worth risking with this type of hobby.

Take a close look at the expended brass and see if you have splits near the neck/throat area.

Not sure what it is, don't think it's a K98. Most of the markings are covered by the scope mount.
    Here's the barrel stamp.
IMG_20200105_182613.jpg The first thing I looked at was the cases. No splits or weird marks. They extracted easily. Hard to get a good picture, but here are the head stamps.
    IMG_20200105_183721.jpg

My next thought was to check a bullet in the end of the barrel but this thing.....
    IMG_20200105_182650.jpg

Now that I've gotten home, I was able to remove the "notabrake" and test a bullet. It snugs up against the rifling before the case makes contact but it's not so snug that it can't be pushed in all the way to the casing.
    IMG_20200105_184254.jpg

I think we can fairly confidently rule out "wrong caliber".
I don't have any gauges and I'm no expert on headspacing or anything.... I do have a bore scope camera thingy but it needs to be charged. Not sure what to look for with it, but I'll stick it down the barrel (maybe with a round in there but the bolt out?)

Anecdotally, as close as those 2 shots were (together and to the point of aim) at ~75yds, I highly doubt the bullets are tumbling right out of the barrel. My guess is that the rifling is not adequately stabilizing the bullet.

Any sign of the round touching the "notabrake" as it leaves the muzzle? Being a sporterized rifle the threads may have not been cut concentric to the bore. Try shooting it with a bare muzzle.
