Is shot show open to the public, or for “industry” folks only? I’d love to attend one, just for the sake of seeing all the cool stuff.

As 95 Taco said, the show is for industry people.

However, consider going to an NRA Annual Meeting and Exhibit. The exhibit halls have the same gun/ammo booths as the SHOT show, just not the non-shooting exhibits. It is only 3 days long, vs. 4 of the SHOT show, and more people attend (80,000 vs. 60,000).

Best of all, it is free to NRA members. Non-members can sign up for membership ($35) and attend the show as well.

I’ve been to several NRAAM events now (Louisville, Indy x2), and it’s always fun. Thanks for the comparison of SHOT vs NRAAM. With that knowledge, the desire to attend SHOT show is now nil.

Not sure if this has been discussed in this thread, but I’m real hesitant about renewing my NRA membership going into 2021. If even one of the many internal accusations made against Wayne L are true, I wouldn’t give NRA another dime. I’ve actually increased my donations to GOA and FPC though.

Seeing the responses of the several 2A orgs that are active now, NRA certainly seems to be the most willing to “compromise” our rights away, and takes the longest to make a public response.

I’m trying to give the NRA the benefit of the doubt, as I’ve been a member for most of my adult life. Every time I’ve asked someone face-to-face, most haven’t heard about the strife within NRA itself, and I’ve even been chastised for even questioning the organization.

    Thoughts?

I've never been a member of the NRA, currently a member of GOA.
I would like to get an NRA membership and make my way to having voting rights because I want to have a say, destroy it from within so to speak and get the current crappy leadership out. It's been a large internal debate for me to decide if I would want my money going to support them before I can vote and it's a choice that I'm willing to make in the long run, but I'll still continue to support FPC and GOA.

That’s part of the rub I’m having with the NRA, and I wasn’t even aware of it until last year...There really isn’t any way for NRA membership to vote any of the executive leadership out. Anything at the executive level, is all by Board of Directors election only, and that Board of Directors Nominating Committee selects who can be voted for. The membership votes for the Board. However, the Nominating Committee is appointed...not sure by whom. What I see, is that the folks being voted for by the membership, are hand-selected by a nominating committee that’s likely been put in place by an executive team, who was...you guessed it...voted in by that hand-selected board.

$360 to go to NRAAM not including food/uber costs, and take a day off work, I'm trying to decide if it's worth it.

    It was shot

A lot of people, a lot of stuff that has been seen before

Glad I got to put my hands on a few new things and overall I had a good time because its Vegas and my casino tax wasnt too costly in the evenings

Nothing really jumped off the page as a must have other that Aeros new pistol caliber AR that's they're gonna drop in April in both 9 and 10/45 flavors for glock mag compatibility

I also got to hold the new Larue Siete which I liked but wont ever get because I have no use for it

I was quite impressed with the feel and fit of the new Ruger 5.7

Diamondback is running a 5.7 upper now too, that seems to be the hot new caliber for everyone to start jumping on

Oh and FN is bringing a SCAR in 6.5 to civilian market

Trijicon booth was too packed every time I went by so no hands on with their new stuff

the new Vortex doesnt do anything for me, but it is nice

Shadow Systems still continues to impress me and they're bringing a new model out shortly

The B&T SMG is cool as fuck but at dealer cost of like $2k seems ridiculous

The new Alien pistol is not worth the rumored price point

The Holosun 507K is sweet and a perfect size for the little single stack 9s

Again, nothing that I'm absolutely running out to get this week or on first run, but a few things to monitor for sure

The Glock 44 is fantastic in the hand, especially if you like the G19...its the same, but lighter

I MAY pick up an Aero lower for a 10mm AR pistol but I need another AR like I need a hole in the head

I already have 3 or 4 spare lowers, 3 uppers, a spare trigger and a barrel waiting to be built

Lots of patches and stickers of course that are gonna end up at the store except for a few as goodies for our customers like we did last year...dump the stuff into a big box and when someone buys a gun, we let them grab something out of the box

The NRA show is great (I've been to the past 25 of them), but don't short change the SHOT show. It is really something - if you ever get the opportunity to attend, I suggest you take it. At least once, for the experience.

As for the NRA, I understand where you are coming from, and don't really disagree. However, there are people out there that want to destroy the NRA. (As if any gun owner will change their stance on guns if the NRA does not exist.) Many of those people are spreading lies about the NRA, and unfortunately, others are believing them. The NRA has been somewhat silent in answering these - I am not sure why.

As for the accusations, some of the ones I have heard about his spending are in line with the spending of a CEO of a large corporation. Remember, the NRA is a corporation with 5 million members - it is quite big, and has expenses to run. I have heard some outlandish accusations, but have never been offered any evidence. In this arena, I think there have been exaggerations and made up events. Yes, there quite possibly have been some improprieties, but I seriously doubt they are of the scale we hear about. (If they are, that is a problem that must be fixed.)

I have paused my donating to them, waiting to hear on the internal strife.

The NRA sometimes seems to compromise, more than I would like, but remember - politics runs deep. You must play the long game, which I believe they are. Unfortunately, the game can be at our expense. Historically though, the NRA has done a lot of good for the 2A.

While I don't agree with them 100% of the time, they are the biggest game in town. I think we need to stick with them. That is not to say to not join and support other organizations, just the abandoning the NRA will not help anyone except the anti-gun crowd.

    Thanks for the share.

Seems like the search for new calibers has grown more recently. Has that always been the case, or a mix of military and civilian taking renewed interest?

    Yes - but...

If enough of the membership votes for the non-swamp directors, the board could change. It is not easy, and the executive leadership has done to make this process very difficult - but it still is possible.

If you want to help make a change, do not vote for any person picked by the nominating committee.

Theres always a crowd that wants wildcat calibers for any of a variety of reasons, but lately the major players in firearms manufacturing have really been backing some of these

I would like to think this is right. I’ve voted for Adam Kraut now twice I think, just to name one. He seems like a Ross Perot type. Everyone you talk to voted for him, but he wasn’t even a second thought at the end of the day.

Not being a life member, your point about voting is something I hadn’t considered before. Don’t renew, and I loose my right to vote, until I either buy a life membership or pay dues for 5 consecutive years. That in an of itself is enough to keep me on the membership roles, even if the vote is essentially symbolic.
