Try some Ballistol on all your wood. It has special chemical properties that makes it emulsify when mixed with water so it's perfect for any part of a weapon from protection to lubrication.

    https://ballistol.com/

I use it on all my outdoor locks and have never had one seize. On my roller bearing hinged knives nothings better. It cleans and protects leather unlike anything else. Because it doesn't contain any toxic chemicals it's not only safe for the environment, and because it contains some isopropyl alcohol, in a pinch you can use it to help clean and disinfect a wound in the field until you can get some proper first aid.

I've been using it for years. However, I just bought new fangled synthetic oil to try on my Glock. I'll give it a try and see what all the fuss is but most likely I'll just stick with my tried and true.

Hey Jeremy  yea, it has an odd aroma and feels somewhat light which makes you wonder about it, but it just works on anything.

Counter question to the question....how much warning response time do you get? If you have motion detection at the beginning of the property and it takes an average person, say 2 minutes to get to the door then, sure, Kit up.
However if you have just a 30 second response time, and you go for the weapon, you’ll need the ear pro right there. The problem is when people are in a rush, and under stress they tend cut out the things that are least important to their immediate and relevant situation.

I certainly agree. I personally anticipate (and plan) on having verrrrry little time to do anything before me and the bad guy start dancing. I do have some early warning methods installed inside & outside the property/house to buy me a few more seconds to prep. Ear pro is certainly last on my list of kit necessities.

    Same crap everyone else got
Not only are you going to have to have them close by the weapon, you are going to have to put them on and then remember to turn them on if they are noise cancelling. I use the Howard leight impact sport muffs. They work fine and aren't expensive. Esp when they go on sale. You have to turn them on by rotating the volume which I can see myself easily forgetting to do if it's go time. So then I would think I'm at a disadvantage at that point. But of course this can probably be minimized with practice and muscle memory.

I'll probably catch some flak for this, but I'm not going to be going out and clearing my house john wick style if I think someone is in the house. My ass will roll out of bed and use it as cover, while I aim at the door to my master bedroom. That leaves me with enough time to don some ear pro. Stuff can be replaced, and I don't want the weight of killing someone on my conscience. As long as my wife and dog are in the room with me, that's all I care about.

Edited because I quoted the wrong post.

If I hear glass break or any other sign that there’s somebody actively in the house then I 100% agree, if it’s just the dogs aggressively barking in the back yard then I will check the house on the way to the back yard, verify that there’s nobody in the yard and verify that the doors are locked and alarm is set.

That's a good point. We have cameras both inside and out so my go-to is to check the cameras from my phone if I think anything is afoot, and then do a walk around and make sure everything is squared away.

Adding to this theory, I live in a two story with stairs that fold back on themselves. That is the most vulnerable point should I decide to play John Wick. So for me, use the choke point at the top of the stairs from down the hall, 14 yes away.
Trying to clear a house, single handed, against unknown numbers and zero Intel seems like a death mission.

You want me and mine, come get some!

I can see myself taking this route of defense too Randy. I think though, (after reading some of these posts) that I am missing something.

Are you all talking about needing or wanting to wear hearing protection during your response to a home invasion because your weapon is too loud? I just want to be sure I am on the same page.

Yep exactly. It's very loud and will be disorienting if you have to fire it in the tight confines of your home.

Here, some people may want a point of reference.

    Silencer_Sound_Comparsion_chart.jpg

Of course these figures below are generally meant to indicate extended exposure (8 hours).

    dBA-Chart-PNG.67143848_std.jpg

The motorcycle is for one with legal mufflers. A straight pipe 1100 cc motorcycle is measured closer to 125 dBA.

I shot my gun one time without ear pro in, never again. A single shot from my 9mm and my ears were ringing a bit. Damn guns, being all loud and shit.

I shot a .308 Browning lever action inside my bedroom once by accident, it was loud but didn't deafen me.

I think each person is going to be different, and some will obviously be more sensitive than others. It might also be determined by whether or not they are accustomed to extremely loud noises. Some people never experience those.

My security siren alarm for example is pushing 110 dBAs. In the event of a break-in, it will not stop until I turn it off. Then the monitoring company will be calling me on top of that. If I don't answer the phone the police are immediately dispatched.

It's slang for ear protection, just a general terminology used for anything that'll protect your hearing.

Just my .02 here. I have had two attempted home invasions. First one in 2006 and the second one last year. I have cameras inside and out. The first one ended with me holding the POS at gunpoint until the Sheriff showed up. The second one ended with a K9 catching the POS in the woods behind my house. I have had a lot of training Military and civilian. Both times this happened the last thing I thought of was hearing protection. What if you accidentally shot a family member or child because you had on hearing protection and were unable to properly hear some faint sound that could have saved a life. OK rant over
