Yes Sir it is a BS thread until it gets real at 2:00 am. Example: say you accidentally shoot one of your kids and later your Wife’s lawyer asks you why you had on hearing protection that kept you from hearing your child say Dad don’t shoot.

with noise cancelling ones, they actually have a microphone on them so you can hear normal talk and even faint sounds better. But again, this is assuming you remember to put them on and then turn them on also.
All of these posts are really just making me look into turning my HD weapon into a suppressor host now and go through all the MAN's hoops to do so....

I think the ear pro being talked about (at least me) is the kind that has the microphones in it and picks up voices/noises. They're very effective and would prevent exactly this.

Statistically... we're all more likely to encounter a house fire. How many keep a fire extinguisher in the BR?

Agree, I ain't putting muffs or plugs in that hinder my hearing in a situation like that. I rather be able to hear everything, even my loud ass gun and lose a drum after than not be able to hear when I need to for that situation.

I agree that they magnify sound. My point was that you will probably not going to remember to put them on. Unless you practice by putting them on every time you get up to pee at night :D

My red dot automatically turns on when it senses movement, i.e. the rifle being picked up. That'd be a cool feature for ear pro too.

also agree, that's the biggest issue I think. Won't remember to put them on and if you do, will you remember to turn them on. If not they will do more harm than good. Which reinforces my venture down the rabbit hole of picking a suppressor. Thought I was going to get some work done today but guess not now haha.

well then do some research and develop some motion activated noise cancelling muffs!

    My plan of action...
[Master bedroom & 2 kids rooms are all upstairs with the stairway split between our rooms... Stairs slope away from my master bedroom door so I can see halfway down the stairs if I just sit up in bed...]
Wife is trained to grab her phone, run across to grab one baby in one room and lock themselves in the second baby’s room. All that takes less than 10 seconds. She then hunkers down, tries to keep the kids quiet, and calls 911.
While she’s doing that, I’m putting on my glasses, racking my HD pistol that’s always within arms reach, finger resting on the gun light’s toggle switch while I sit and wait behind concealment with a straight shot looking at/down the top crest of the stairs. Should that perp make it halfway up, I start seeing his head and he wouldn’t see me until it’s too late. Any stray bullets (near misses) are landing nowhere near the wife & kids.
Only thing I’d have a hard time with is if he starts harming my dog downstairs. I don’t know if I could sit upstairs and listen to him hurting/killing my dog.

I have never had to defend myself with a firearm so I can't say anything about that....
But I have been hunting. I would never shoot my hunting rifle on the range without ear protection. I'm sure it would deafen me.
I have never had ear protection on when shooting an animal and I've never even experienced ringing.
I think it has something to do with adrenaline or fight/flight response or something like that, but I don't believe ear protection would be an issue in a self defense situation.
I'm not 100% sure on this one either, but I don't think soldiers routinely wear ear protection even when they're fully expecting to fire their weapons.

I'm not disagreeing with you Bill. Just trying to keep the mood light.

As a matter of fact, I think the average person would be extremely freaked out in a home invasion situation. I have never needed one but I suppose there are special FBI style civilian training facilities that are set up where you bring your family with you. They are probably set up to replicate an at home in bed at night simulation so you can train to protect them during a home invasion. Otherwise what's the point. We practice fire safety procedures with our families, why not home invasion?

My guess is though without that type of constant and diverse training you're pretty much relying on your animal instincts. I know a lot of people in the military and law enforcement and none of them has ever talked about having training like this either within or outside of their occupations.

Hell, I'd be willing to bet good money that most decent people can go their entire lives without a single personal confrontation of any type, let alone an in-home fire fight. Unfortunately we can't say the same for criminals.

Have ambush Points in your house..nobody knows your home better than you.. and buy a high lumen light on your firearm. When you put that light in someone’s eyes it has a huge effect, disorienting, and followed by 5 to the Chest.

be mentally prepared to fight to the death defending your home and family.

The best watch Dog I ever had passed last Nov. I am now training his replacement. That would be a hard call to sit still a listen to that take place. But in a life or death situation the Dog may just be collateral damage vs human life of family
