Good stuff right there, it's obvious you know what's shakin.

To the OP, your attitude and seeking of knowledge beforehand are the makings for a good, responsible gun owner. There is so much to learn, but you surely look like you are headed in the right direction. Best of luck in your journey.

Ok, if you’re shooting frangible ammo and not FMJ it might not penetrate some drywall, particle board and vinyl siding. You’re still permanently deaf in your left ear.

Look up Officer Down, Officer Borders vs Mettinger. Officer Borders was shot in the head by a 12 gauge and not only survived but, after nearly depleting all of his .45 ammo, finally got a head shot into the dirtbag and dropped him.

The whole one shot, one kill thing just cracks me up, regardless if its with a 45 or a shotgun. I believe its ill advice to tell someone that all they need is 1 or 2 rounds, or even 8. Again, refer to the Borders vs Mettinger writeup.

The .223 will go through the perp, through the wall, and and hit the neighbors kid? Seriously? We are talking about a .223 round that will fragment, keyhole, tumble upon the slightest impact. We are not talking about a 308 round or a 50 cal. Anyone carrying FMJ for home defense ammo needs to just stop playing Rambo and get some quality ammo that will not only reduce overpenetration greatly, but will ensure maximum wound cavitation. Personally I carry 75gr TAP.

It's amazing that with all the bullshit out there, it's easy to spot quality advice, such as this post.

The majority of FMJ 5.56 will actually penetrate less than many common handgun calibers and shotgun cartridges

Varmint rounds And some soft tips work too and really don’t go any further than a handgun. They dump energy on soft targets well too.

Next the average decibels of a 9mm (average is based on different barrel lengths) is 162 decibels for a 9mm. The same type of average for a .223 out of a AR is 165 decibels. I don’t think your ears are going to care one way or another about the 3 decibels about difference.

Short barrel rifles with have more boom noise.

There are all sorts of one off situations where people were killed by one .22 Rim fire short from half a mile or absorbed 18 rounds of 9mm to the chest and survived. Those are outliers on the bell curve of gunfights.

5.56 is a 60 000 PSI round travelling 3000+ FPS. At 5 yards it won’t penetrate the side of a house??? Lol

I appreciate the level of knowledge you are demonstrating but I’m wondering if you’ve ever shot a big game animal and field dressed it?

My 16” AR-15 was extremely loud even in an outdoor range with hearing muffs. Way way louder than my handguns, shotguns, or hunting rifles. I can’t imagine shooting one indoors without ear plugs. That’s just my experience.

3 decibels more means it’s twice as loud. Logarithmic scale.

    Yes.

It's not a chance I'm willing to take with my family nearby.

If Canadians weren’t afraid of the sound of their rifles maybe they’d be allowed to keep them :boink:

The AR is pretty simple to operate, after all during its adaptation as the M16 it was designed for a bunch of new recruits to quickly learn the weapon platform and go to war with it. Cleaning it... a little more technical than say a M1 Garand. Its lightweight, if you keep it basic.

I hated Glocks back in the late 80s and early 90's. I was more into S&W at the time but got tired of their reliability issues. A friend of mine was a combat arms instructor (AF) who also worked at a gun shop in Albuquerque, The Gun Room. So we got to shoot everything that was on the market. I still didn't like Glocks. Until I had to buy some parts for my S&W because the hammer literally broke in half. All brand new factory parts, drawbar, sear, etc. Guess what? That shit required "honing and massaging" like so many 1911 parts require for them to function properly. I finally got that particular pistol working again, sold it, and bought a Glock 19. Its ugly, a bit boxy, but aside from one cartridge that was a reload that jammed up on feeding (the case didn't properly resize in the press), I never had any failures with my Glocks. Either of the two Glock 19s, the 22, 23 or 42. And I've fired many thousands of rounds through them.

The Shields are supposed to be up there as far as reliability of Glocks. When the market gets back to normal I plan on purchasing one. I know James Yeager, who will always side with a Glock 19, also suggests the Shield, I'd like to believe that someone with years of experience, and so many different firearms being ran in his classes, would have a good sense of what works.

Maybe some of you adults that hate Glocks and ARs complaining about its grip or trigger need to have this kid show you a thing or two. :p

Buckshot will zip through walls, not only do you have one projectile but 9, or whatever shell you are shooting.

It’s over twice as loud in that sense (Like by 100%) but because of my poorly expressed point, that was not what I meant. I meant it’s loud to the point after the first round fired, you’re not going to notice either way no matter what gun you’re using indoors. It’s a mute point and their all close to the point of peak hearing damage.

    Touché!

Once they are voted out the Conservatives will repeal the law. There’s a 2 year amnesty and nobody I know has turned anything in yet.

Oh, let me guess... you are guessing I've never hunted and shot a deer because I'm a woman? What a sexist thing to suggest.

Not sorry to test your male ego, but I was brought up around guns. Both my father and stepfather were vets and enjoyed shooting. And my grandfather was huge into hunting, enough so he had some hunting land and a cabin. I was what maybe 12 or whatever when I attended hunters safety course, after which my dad and gramp gave me a .22 LR rifle and a 20 gauge shotgun so I could actually hunt with them instead of just watch.

My comment had Nothing to do with you being a woman. That’s actually sexist for you to suggest that.

And You never answered my question.
