I'm north of Seattle and it's the same. No sirens and must obey all traffic laws, our department even looks down on the blue lights but they're allowed.

If you hit another vehicle en-route to the station for a call I guarantee your department would be sued if there were any serious medical issues. The moment you leave your house you're an employee.

Wow. How the fuck did this go so bad??? First of all thank you for what you do. I truly know what you do because I am a full time professional firefighter. There is no way I would do this shit for free. Any one that talks shit I ask you to throw on 70lbs of gear go in to a sauna and do 100 jumping jacks along with 50 push ups and then tell me I am a fat piece of over weight crap!!! And do it with low air while the drywall celing is falling down on you. The guy asked for advise not your bull shit. Be thankful someone is there willing to help you no matter the time or conditions. Whether is your loved one having a heart attack to your house fully involved in flames or your pissy stomach cramps.

Me either but I have had to go to two calls where volunteers have rolled their personal vehicle's going to a fire and multiple one's that have wrecked. Nothing beats professional training for driving emergency vehicles.

You can't help someone if you don't make it to the call.

Hell, we don't even respond to the majority of our calls with L&S. We just don't see the time savings. It's the whole risk vs reward thing. As for the whole 20 mph over thing, every state I've ever worked in the max is 10 over when running hot.

We run lights to the scene but 99.9% of them go to the hospital with no lights. Not worth the risk and you don't really save that much time. We end up with a 25 minute transport time regardless of the L&S.

What if they are well trained yokels and not ripping their personal vehicles and not pushing civilians through intersections and not have an accident and end up at a EMS call that's medically more urgent than stomach pain? What if the yokel actually saved a life?

The guys below said the answer. What good is running lights to a call even for something legitimate if you are going to cause an accident and you don't even have tools, equipment, or personnel to do anything?

To answer your question, fine it's a small kitchen fire or something. You show up after flying down the street pushing others out of the way with your hard to see tacoma and get there. What now? Stand around and wait for the fire truck to show up? So many firemen die, and many more get injured doing that. Not to mention the innocent people the injure on the way.

If that was the case then they don't need lights and sirens

What if the well trained yokel firefighter with the lights and siren that he has installed, with the suggestions from TW members, (that meet his fire districts' guidelines, and his fire chiefs recommendations) dutifully responds to a call, with citizens safely and lawfully pulling over when they hear his siren and see his lights, safely arrives at the scene and the fire truck isn't there yet?

I'm pretty sure the trained yokel will find something to do.
