    It has nothing to do with desperation. How about:
    4. If somebody needs a truck because theirs is at the end of its life
    3. Putting a deposit down demonstrates one's seriousness and that you're not just "looking"
    2. A refundable deposit is risk-free
    And number one:
    1. Because it's the only way you will get one.

    Hope this helps give you an "idea" or 2. It's naive to think that Toyota is willing to sacrifice its position as the maker of the most popular mid-sized truck, and introduce an inferior product.
