So u had a brake pad fall off, came completely apart, stopping portion broke clean from mounting part . Not my gripe, got new padsand went to replace it, and got 3 lug nuts off no problem, the last 3 I had decided the tire place tighten too much and stripped the studs. While tryin to apply pressure and turn at the same time the "lug nut cap" came off. This is how I got the remainin two off. In doin so we broke them so I was going to take all if them off, 1 1/2 hours later I had the 6 from one wheel done. Why di they putthese caps on? Sockets don't fit over them right and they are a PITA TO GET OFF. Am I alone in this frustration? Painted nuts black just 18 more to go

I assume they have been on there sine 05 since the "shoulders" were wore down from tire places using sockets with caps on, and actual nuts looked practically brand new. I read a lot if ppl having problems with.caps falling off, but I was not one of these. I will soon not have to worry with it any more.

Toyota studs are for shit. They break pretty easy compared to other makers even if you hit torque spec.

Lube of some form is needed as well.

It'd not the studs or nuts, its the Chrome caps on the nuts the I have come to loathe. Grease or anti cease with not resolve this issue that I am havin, I have found no way to remove the caps w/out destroying them, but u wouldn't put them back on anyway because theyre such a headache as previously described.

The dry torque is 85 ft lbs... what's the torque value changed to when using anti-seize?

Over 5 years no problems with just the same torque value. Not to mention the 500 other vehicles I used the anti seize on

When was the last time you had the wheels & tires off?

Do you rotate your tires/wheels regularly?

After nearly seven years of ownership many of my lug nuts are toast for this very reason. I've always used a socket (usually 12-point) or the factory tire iron to remove and/or reinstall them, then a torque wrench to snug them to 85 ft-lbs. The only time they've ever seen an air impact ratchet (or whatever those things are called) was at the tire shop when I had the original tires replaced. On a recent tire rotation I found that many lug nuts started to become oblong/marred and wouldn't accept a 21mm socket or the tire iron. I had to use a 7/8" impact socket on an air driver to remove them. I then replaced the bad lug nuts with newer ones I bought from a member here.

I will only use a 6-point 21mm socket from here on out - not a 12-point socket or the tire iron.

    Same here.....
Anti-seize every time when rotating the tires every 5,000K miles. I use a impact gun with a 100lb torque stik and go over them again with a regular torque wrench at 100lb. Every vehicle I've ever owned and never had problems with lug nuts or studs ever.

    As a rule of thumb, -10 to -15% of dry torque vaule. 85 ftlbs - 10% = 76.5 ftlbs.

I haven't checked with the Tacoma but most manufactures say do not use anti-sieze or any lubricant.

Good info... Thanks. I tried to find the thread here about the damage that results if the wet/dry torque value isn't taken into concideration. The thread showed pictures of multiple broken bolts and stripped threads.

March when I got new tires, again no problem witg the nuts coming off after I got the Chrome caps off. The "nuts" u see are not actually nuts, the nuts are under the caps which are stamped on the nuts from what I can tell

I had to go back and re-read your original post.

You mentioned your brake pad came off ....

Sounds like whoever installed your wheels/tires the last time, didn't tighten the wheel enough (or it came loose). While the wheel was loose... and you drive on it .... The pads come loose, it could put pressure on the caliper which would bend & snap mounting bolts, pads come out.... wheel studs get bent and/or threads get bitched up.

Then...when you try to remove the lug nuts, there are no threads to unscrew them off with and you end up trying TOO HARD to remove them and break the outter shell of the lug nut off.

    That's my guess......
Either way.... Sounds like you need new lug nuts and I would definitely inspect the studs too. Make sure they're not stripped or bent.

I use never sieze on everything i have apart including wheel studs. I think 90% of the time when you have a garage change tires or rotate tires, they are over torqued. They always use a impact wrench, they are always in a hurry, there is always a young kid doing tires. No garage is going to pay an experienced journeyman mechanic to change tires when the can get a kid to do it for half the money. How many times have i had my rotors ruined because the front wheels are not tightened properly.
    My rant for the day
