first gen 4x4 5spd: rattling sound coming from transfer case/tranny

    I went on trail ride this weekend and halfway through I couldnt shift out of 4Lo at all. And couldn't shift into first unless I was moving. After I made it out I let her sit for a couple hrs and shifting went back to normal. But now my problem is that I keep hearing loud rattling(like the sound of a chain being dropped or a handful of change being dropped on metal)nothing is visibly stuck under the body, shifts like normal, I'm just worried about this sound.... any ideas? Thanks guys.
