Recently bought a 2002 prerunner and I’m going to start working towards an overland build. I’ve been looking for bed racks and can’t seem to find any for first generations. Does anyone know where I can find any? Im in college so the cheaper the better.

Your truck is over 20 years old; the whole 'overlanding' trend has only kicked off in the most recent years so most older vehicles won't be supported at all.

Those that were, have fallen off the map unfortunately.

You can have a custom bed rack made, but really only viable if you're the one welding it yourself.

Otherwise you can pick one up on the used market; @Taco critter has his for sale which would serve you well to hold lots of added accessories, etc.

You know it wasn't that long ago that what everyone now calls "overlanding" was simply "camping."

Have you ever car-camped before? What kind of gear do you already have? Ground tent? Sleeping bag/pad? 2 burner stove? Etc....

But now we all have squirtles, $1500 fridges, $1000+ rack systems, $2000+ roof top tents, $10,000 in suspension and armor mods, and all sorts of other crap we "need" to buy to make our trucks capable enough for instagram.

Don't waste your money. At least not yet. There are FAR better things you could be spending your limited resources on.

For the cost of a roof top tent alone, you could fully outfit yourself with ALL the gear you actually need to go camping, and that includes buying a really nice ground tent, all the cookware, etc...

What about off-roading? How much experience do you have there? No need to go hog wild on suspension, tires, and armor mods either. These trucks are far more capable 100% stock than your average novice driver.

Also keep in mind your weight capacities. These are not large trucks, these aren't even medium sized trucks. 90% of the "fully built up" overlanders out there are very likely significantly over the max GVWR.

I meant an overland-type build for off-road fishing trips mainly. I need a bed rack to help with storing things in my bed, not just bc I want one haha. Thanks for the input you seem to be very passionate about the subject haha

He means well lol but it's easy to forget that not everyone's goal is what we assume it will be.

Do I though? I'm kind of just a sarcastic a-hole...

To be fair, 99% (fake made-up statistic) of folks who say they want to "do overlanding" on a budget are afraid to get into the hobby because they think you "need" the things they see on instagram to go overlanding.

@shack02 it doesn't sound like what you want is an "overlanding" type build, then. It just sounds like you just want a rack for fishing gear.

My general advice for camping type stuff still holds if you're looking to go camping while fishing/off roading.

Check out Billie Bars, even works with a tonneau cover which was necessary for me. No affiliation, just a really good product and much cheaper than any of the other companies out there for 1st gens.

All_pro makes one. If you can weld (or know someone) it comes in a "kit" so you can cut to size (height).
