I wanted to apex my shield so bad but for whatever reason, no matter how much I took it to the range, I couldn’t get comfortable with it and accuracy was horrible. Switched to the G19 and threw an overwatch precision trigger in and love it.

I have a S&W model 686 357 for home and woods and you can shoot cheap 38's in it as well. I can drive a nail at 20 to 30 yards with that thing. For CCW I have a Glock 36. Yea it's a single stack and only 6 rounds but 6 45 rounds. It works for me.

Ive got some more thoughts to toss your way. This is purely self defense related, and you should think about how these parameters effect your self defense plans. All defense minded individuals know they only need one shot to count. Some accomplish this by increasing capacity and thus put more shots down range, and some practice more and thus don't need as many shots, most do both. The capacity of your pistol will effect your ability to conceal it. A double stack mag is wider, I find it easier to hold in my hand (I wear xl gloves), but it sticks out more in your holster, and makes it harder to truly conceal. The double stack, for me at least, is an easier pistol to draw quickly and fire accurately. The single stack, true compacts, are difficult for me to draw and fire accurately and quickly because my pinky is usually left hanging in the breeze, so I'm stabilizing with my thumb, ring and middle fingers, and every time I tense up to prepare to fire the nose of the gun drops, so I have to pause for a second to correct my grip... and then I can shoot a relatively accurate group. However, these compacts are very easy to conceal and often don't require much more than a tee-shirt to convincingly cover from the general public. Some fit in your back pocket and look like an oversized wallet.

This is important to think about because if you CCW, you have a responsibility to CCW correctly. Don't half ass it. People act weird around folks that open carry, and even more weird around folks that obviously conceal carry to the point you will likely have the cops called on you and routinely find yourself being questioned or avoided by people who would normally be friendly. You don't want to cause panic by being irresponsible. Some argue that you would be targeted in a shooting event if your firearm is visible - so another reason to truly conceal your weapon.

So, if you have big hands and dont shoot tiny guns very often consider how this will effect your accuracy. If you do choose a full sized or double stack mag, consider how this will effect your ability to responsibly CCW. Obviously, the smallest thinnest gun is better for CCW, and the most ethical - learn to shoot it.

Believe it or not. I use to see this stuff all the time when I was with my students at the Range. I pulled people off the line too many times to count.

There is a lot of good advice coming from members here. I owned one pistol for 20 years before I moved up. I shot a POS Berretta 92sf and competed with it successfully for a long time. A few years back I moved to a SIG 226 Elite, full-size. It is my competition gun, and my CCW. Always fear the man who owns one firearm, for he is deadly with it. I love, freaking love Kimbers, but they dont fit my hand AT ALL. I put the newer SIGs in and the trigger finger had an orgasm. So, I found one that does it all. Being 6' and a wide frame dude, I can conceal it no problem. FIND WHAT FITS YOU or you wont shoot it. I PROMISE YOU

OP another recommendation I'd make is be sure to look for a striker fire pistol for your first handgun. Not sure if anyone's said it outright yet, but worth saying.

I carry a S&W Shield .40 or a Springfield XDs .45 daily. I usually carry them in my waste band on my right side towards my back. I like the Shield because it has a safety on it and I don't want to forget it when I poop in the bathroom and one of the kids find it. The XDs feels better in my hand though. If I feel like I need more than 7 bullets I carry a S&W M&P compact 9mm. I like it but it's just to big to conceal for me. I've had a couple of 1st gen Glocks (26 & 27) but didn't like the way they felt.

If you buy a HiPoint be sure and have a bat in your other hand because when the gun fails and you throw it at them you will need the bat to defend yourself.

Consider explaining the difference and why you recommend it over the other option….

    Don't get a hi-point bro... just... don't... do... it...

There are several manufacturers who make far superior pistols for not much more. Look at Taurus or even Kel Tec. Lot's of folks have mentioned M&P shields, you can easily find those in the $300 range. Go to your local gun store and see what they have used on consignment. Whatever it takes, just raise your budget a little and don't get a hi-point

My first handgun with intent to carry was a S&W snub (airweight 642 type deal) 38 Special. More power then a .380 Very compact. Definitely not the most accurate but what I like about a revolver is its much simpler then your average semi auto. You don't have to "think" or get confused in the moment you need to use it fumbling around with the action or safety's or wondering if there one in the chamber. It is point and shoot, no potential for jamming up or stove piping or feed issues.. Its simplistic.. Now that being said I suppose it could be more dangerous to someone unfamiliar with basic firearm common sense being so simplistic.

BudsGuns website is a good place to start. Many of my former students use them as do I. Never had an issue and good prices IMO.

I think way too many people are overly concerned about printing when concealing. Should you be mindful about it? Absolutely. Will random people ever notice if you’re slightly printing? Doubtful. Especially if you carry appendix, no ones first thought is “is that guy carrying a gun?”
