I've owned several Toyota trucks, several with automatic transmissions and like many others, was pretty disappointed in the 6 speed auto in the Tacoma. I had the TSB applied when they were replacing the head for the burnt valve problem and I have to say it's a night and day difference.

I can't say it's like being in the ECT mode as I seldom used it and had just become accustomed to the poor shifting. No more! And while I haven't been on the interstate yet which is another situation where I disliked how it shifted, I suspect I'll be happier there too.

I had to pay $160 for the TSB and my serial number wasn't in the range of those covered by the change which had me a little worried that it wasn't going to make much difference. I still wonder why all models are not included?

Uh, there is no VIN range, and its covered under US Federal Emission warranty. 96 mo 80,000 miles. This should be covered.

Also it pays 0.4 warranty, so I'd charge 0.5 customer pay, so around 90$. 160$ is robbery.

Can someone share the TSB 0092-20?

I've always known that the local dealer is ridiculously expensive, this was the best opportunity to get it done. As for coverage, a good friend works there as service coordinator and they confirmed there are specific serial numbers that are covered within all years which is what the service rep was telling me when I first asked. I guess I could take it up with a district rep but it was the same story from two sources. And yes, when it is covered, it is under the emission warranty.

Most TSB's have VIN ranges in them, this one does not. It just states the year, and the ECU config #.

If the update was accepted, it meant you had the affected CAL ID# and was part of the TSB, thus covered.

I hate stuff like this, we fight to cover people and make them enjoy their Toyota, but lots of dealers go out of their way to make money.

how do you know if your truck is part of the TSB? have they loaded them up on newer trucks already or do we still have to go to the stupid dealer for the upgrade?

They aren't supposed to be advertised, but basically most 3rd gen owners from 2016-2020 complained of shift issues. So toyota has TSB's for those models to help with customer satisfaction.

I can tell you that your 21 has no updates, nor does any 4 cylinder model.

Your dealer service rep is a liar. They should not have charged you but these days it does not surprise me.

    See the tsb at https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/tsbs/2020/MC-10181772-9999.pdf

I had a TSB update done on my ‘21 because the crawl control was turning itself off as soon as it hit any real resistance. When they did it, they flashed my ECU and reset everything and the truck drove way different and got shitty gas mileage for at least 4 or 5 tanks afterwards. I’m not sure if it had any shift programming changes, but it did fix my crawl control.

I had the TSB on my 18. Never was a problem shifting but had some gear hunting in the mountains on vacation three years ago. I got it tuned and the rest is history, been updated a few times and the KDMAX Pro 9 tune nailed it but then again every update is a little better every time. Just tune it and be done, I'm on 285s and getting 18 avg. mpgs, and yes its calibrated and checked my math!

Thats nice to hear yours turned out good. A buddy of mine had the same upgrade to his 2019 trd auto when he owned the truck. He claimed it did little for his tacoma. The dealer had done the same tsb on my 2020 before i picked up the truck when it had less than a mile on the odo. All i can say after 1500 miles its one fine running tacoma. Trucks been everything i can ask for.

I was told by the dealer here you have only a year of 10k miles to get that tsb upgrade. Back around 2 years ago they charged my buddy $120 for it saying his mileage was past 10k.

It seems dealers are all over the map on this. Your friend should have gotten a copy of the TSB where it clearly states that it's covered warranty item up to 80,000 miles. My dealer said my serial number wasn't included and charged me $160 but there's nothing in the TSB that states there is a serial number applicability and I'm going to fight for a refund.

Correct. And if you see some of the WOs that have been posted, it is typically charged at 0.4hr of time. The flash process only takes 10min start to end.

Thanks to the info provided by Bishop84 and CrrispyTacoLover, I went back to the dealer today and 'informed' them of their apparent error. I went straight to the service manager and he agreed that the update couldn't have been loaded on a vehicle that wasn't eligible. He double checked the service records to confirm that it was loaded and then promised me a check for the $160 plus tax.

    Thanks guys!

I have another positive observation about the software update - the cruise control works much smoother. Previously, if I was more than 5 mph or so below the previously set speed, pressing the resume button would result in a downshift, perhaps as much as from 6th to 4th, and nearly flooring the accelerator. Now it applies far less throttle and only a single downshift if that. Much more civilized.

Ford only recalled 47,000 10 speeds for shifting issues. Seems like every one is having issues with multi speed automatic transmissions. GM, Ford, Chrysler Toyota etc. My 6 speed manual works fine!
