I enjoyed going up hill in the smoky mountains with the ect on, the downhill was where it really bothered me with the crazy shifting

I feel stuck at times. Can't just pack up and travel to another state. Airfare is crazy expensive. Don't get me wrong, I love living in Hawaii, wouldn't want to live anywhere else.

I think that's the only thing that would bother me, just knowing I couldn't leave easily. But with all the traveling I have done I still love where I live and I don't think I'd want to live in any other state as weird as that is. I'd definitely love to explore Hawaii for a few weeks though. Thanks for the reply!

For me only and my truck 5th will hold 80+ unless you encounter a grade! Just forget cruise control if driving long distance with hills small grades, You are better off just shifting the truck manually to your desired speed and rpm.otherwise it will drive you nuts and frustrate you!Not sure about the ECT if it cancels Atkinson.

808vw sorry if I came off as a prick. Just getting emotional about this truck. Glad you enjoy yours!
I think Tacoma is the state vehicle for Hawaii! I was in Kauai for my honeymoon last summer and I think every other vehicle you see is a Tacoma!

Hey oldschoolczar if i were you i would go for several test drives, get the feel of the truck and definitely drive the highways and make sure you watch the dealer check all the fluids in your truck before you sign any paperwork!!! BEFORE YOU SIGN!

No worries! You should come to Oahu, you'd be amazed how many tacomas are running around.

Hey I drink coffee, smoke cigarrettes and conquer LA traffic just fine in my stickshift, but to each their own. was just a suggestion since manual owners seem to be happy as clams for the most part.

Many have found that cruise is the major issue and 6th gear. 5th is already an overdrive and 6th is even more so. Most have found driving with cruise off and using S5 mode, the trucks stay in 5th even up small inclines and even will accelerate in 5th. I have also found the same. 6th gear was purely for the EPA emissions and MPG standard.

The EPA estimates are based on driving 48 MPH 50% of the time and 55-60 MPH the other 50% of the time.

According to a member here, a service manager told him an update to the cruise control software should show up here in the fall, for what ever that is worth.

At 90 mph with any type of incline or wind plan to be running 4 th gear and 4500 rpm and 15 mpg , it's not just a cruise control issue trans still hunts for gears regardless. I've tried sport and etc which help a little but my truck is a joke compared to my 2011 dclb 4x4 4.0 auto or my 2012 access cab 4.0 speed 4x4 I've had previously
My '16 double cab limited was a waste of $42,000

    Sorry to hear this OP!
I had the same issue even after having my fluid topped off.
I did the battery disconnect and I shit you not it was like night and day. I was missing my 2012 Tacoma so much but now I'm finally starting to love my 16. Try it, can't hurt and it worked for me. Good luck brother.

Hopefully yours will get better with time. It will learn shifting patterns and not do that much shifting at these lower speeds of 60 - 70 mph when you start accumulating more mileage.

I have 11,000 miles on mine, and it does not do that type of shifting at 60 - 70 mph.

When I try and drive at posted 75 mph, and there is a small incline or head wind; it will shift from 2000 rpm up to 3500 rpm; so from 5th to 4th. It feels like the computer is "flooring it", and it is like ridding a bucking horse. It will continue to do this if it is windy. Floor it, back off, floor it, back off etc.

If the shifting was like in your video it would be okay, but mine moves you in the seat when it shifts. If you are holding a coffee; you will be wearing it.

If I DO NOT use the cruise; when I encounter an incline, the truck will slow down in speed as it does not have the torque to maintain 75 mph; then after the incline the truck will then gain speed back up to where it was.

After owning my Taco since last Sept 2015, and all the info from TW since then; I believe that if I had the same gear ratio as the manual tranny a lot of the shifting would disappear.

My truck has 7,800 miles on it. It must be one hell of a slow learner otherwise it's just plain retarded . Lol
If Toyota doesn't fix my laundry list this week they had better buy a couple tons of sugar to go with these imported lemons
