I am one of those guys that usually changes oil on new machines around 1000 miles on a new car, 10 hours on dirt bikes, etc... I would always throw synthetic oil in the engine after the first oil change. Always Mobile 1, too.

I was told by Toyota that I do not need to change my oil until 10,000 miles due to the way the engines are built and that they are running synthetic oil straight from the factory. I am at 7,500 miles and still have not changed the oil yet and I am starting to wondering if I should have went with my gut and changed it at 1,000 miles. I have read on some threads that folks are seeing metal in the oil at 1000 miles. I know there is always going to be tiny bit of metal in your oil but I'm wondering if it's an excessive amount at 1000 miles. Also, does the drain plug have a magnet?

    What are ya'll thinking/doing?

I prefer not to waste money so I will follow the 10k intervals. If it says 10k it could realistically go even longer.

Find me engines that have 10k oil change intervals that are failing early purely because they are having oil changed at 10k vs 5k and I'll reconsider.

If you are considering changing every 5k or 3k, etc it is seriously worth it to have an independent lab do an oil analysis so you can make an educated decision rather than guessing and potentially wasting a bunch of money.

I went 6,000 and changed to Mobil1 0W-20. I haven't decided when I'll change again but it will either be 12 or 14,000 miles. I just can't bring myself to go 10,000 miles. I'm over 40 and old habits are hard to change. It's my money and time and I see it as cheap insurance. I like the truck and want to keep for at least 10 years so that's what I'll keep doing.

its a Toyota truck and that's all the modifications needed
I have 2013 2.7l four and was going to go 10 k miles on MOBIL1 EP oil but I chickened out and changed it yesterday at 7100k, the oil was pitch black but that doesn't mean its not protecting seems like a 7500k OCI would be about right in my opinion, where 10k miles would put the oil at its maximum dirt capacity. Also since changing it drivabilty is much better,MPGs much better, and the drive shaft gets greased. I think 7500K OCI is about safe but a Oil analysis would really verify that.

I did the 1k then every 5k but I've come to realize that I prolly won't keep it longer than 3 years so, 10k it is. That means I'll only have to change the oil 3 more times on this truck.

Now the real important question, what's fer dinner?

Here is my oil at 5k, and I ran a magnet thru it and there was still a good bit of fine metal. And that was the third change at about 16k miles...... So if you want to wait til 10k but be my guest. I'll spend the little extra money and do it every 5k. Only cost me about $30 to do a change with a oem Toyota filter. 20160901_185853.jpg

I changed mine at ~2,000 actually, but that wasn't an option. :p

Always been a fan of the break in oil change, especially on bikes where the oil supply is shared with the transmission. I've seen speculation that it doesn't do anything for cars and trucks, but at about $30 w/ filter, it certainly won't hurt anything, and it's not like you wasted a lot of money if it was pointless.

I've never seen any data to say that changing oil too soon hurts anything other than your finances, so I usually roll with a 5k interval.

Oil is cheap, engines aren't. I change mine at 750-1000 initially and every 3-4K thereafter.

I tried the 10k mile oil change once in my 2006 Tacoma using Mobil 1 and then sent it off to Blackstone Labs for a complete analysis. Long story short, 10k miles was the longest they recommended running that particular oil in that particular engine as the oil was really starting to break down.

I switched back to 5k mile oil changes with an initial 1k break-in change. Peace of mind restored....regardless of whether I will still have this vehicle in 4-5 years or not.

    Stock and loving it
I had it done by dealership at 5k for free and will have them do it again at 15k for free. Then I'll start doing it on my own from there

Did mine at 500 , and debating to do it at 3000. Then every 3000 . Then again most likely 3000 might be a year of driving for me from now forward. I do it myself so it is cheap ins. for about $30 with Mobil 1 and a toyota filter once a year.

... and not a single oil analysis performed. Without actual measured analysis it's all conjecture...

    http://www.blackstone-labs.com/

Me? I questioned BMW's 15,000 mile oil interval and had an analysis done on a 10,000 mile oil change. They said I had tons of oil life left, far beyond the stated interval.

When I get my truck I'll do an oil change at 5000 miles and have an analysis done to see what's real and then decide on my interval from there.

The thing people forget about 10k oil changes, is that engines burn oil. Some more than others. If you don't regularly check it, you might not have much remaining at the 10k mark

Mileage is one variable to mark the need for an oil change. What about time? I hit 6 months before 5000 miles. Would metal particles suspended in the oil deteriorate more over the longer time period?

    What about if I tow?

I checked my dipstick the other day and saw this

I did the analysis thing years ago and it was of no use to me other than seeing the 20 or so different traces of metals/minerals etc. in the oil . With little or no explanation of what means . Unless you have something to compare it to , you wait until a major change in results . This would show a failure of some type and mean tear it down or sell it. Unless I did it dozens of times over the life of the vehicle I could not see the point. I would use this if I had a fleet and drove 100,000's if not millions of miles but not one lone truck.
Believe me changing oil is much cheaper !

Funny thing but my brothers name is Lenny . He runs the maintenance department of a College campus here in the states. He likes to run a proactive rather than reactive program too.
