First oil change at 600 miles supposed to be this dirty?

Just picked up a 2023 Tacoma SR with the 2.7L and decided to change the oil at 600 miles (city driving) because it seems like many believe changing around 500-1,000 miles is good for the longevity of the vehicle. I was surprised at how dark the oil came out given the low mileage. The oil also smelled like gasoline and there was a small pile of metal shavings on the bottom of my waste oil pan. Is this OK or should I be worried?

I wouldn’t be worried about it. Oil gets dark pretty quick. Especially the first fill.

Here is another thread on the topic. You could send a sample to Blackstone for testing.

That's not "dirty". It's soot from the heat of the reciprocating engine parts. The human eye cannot see microscopic wear metals in the oil.

Contaminants can only be spotted through oil analysis!

Also, you shouldn't have changed the oil this soon. Factory oil is meant as break-in oil to help seat engine components for engine longevity.

Don't sweat it brother, almost certainly okay. We here reports like yours often on these (very) low mileage breakin oil changes. Your pistons, rings, and valves are just starting to get to know one another! Give everything an adequate chance to seat in before you start pushing the panic button.

PS: you are already worrying about stuff at the 600 mile mark! This shit will drive you crazy if you let it.

My first change was dirty. Now with my last five 5k oil changes I feel like I'm throwing out new oil. Peace of mind. Forget how it looks.

How any "oil change interval" threads appear each week, each day?

It’s fine, don’t overthink it. Just remember, you can maintain and do everything in the world and all that it takes to undo it all is an idiot on their phone.

That certainly use to be the case (like decades ago), but I am not convinced that it still is. Back then, though, manufacturers would give very specific instructions to change out the break-in oil early. It seems a bit odd to me that nothing from Toyota says to do the first oil change early, but then again they only really care about the engine getting out of warranty.

I have been thinking about this topic quite a bit as my 2023 Tacoma just crossed the 500 mile mark. I think I am going to do the first oil change at around 750 miles. I might get a sample analyzed just for fun.

You can either sit paralyzed in fear over an MPG change of -0.1 and whether the oil change interval is every 750 miles or every 751 miles.

Or you can just use the 4WD in your truck to enjoy the places Corolla and Camrys cannot go.

    I made my choice already.

Smart move, I could smell the dilution in my oil too and I changed it even earlier. I have v6 but it’s the same deal. Anybody that builds engines and has actual experience always recommends do the first OCI early.

No no no. Jeep cares about warranty period. Ford cares about warranty period.
Toyota whole business case is built around longevity, real or perceived. They still build them to last.
And, all those noobs who think their oil is "dirty" at 500 miles? Um no. It is simply soot from combustion, and soot is a two micron particle. Your clearance in the engine is 17 or so microns. Soot is only bad if you never change your oil. It will eventually, after 30K of no oil changes, turn to sludge which is bad. Change your oil however often you like but damn, learn something before you post.
Question... how the fuck will dirt get in your oil anyway? You only ever get two things... metal and soot. Soot is normal. Dirt is not a thing unless you dropped a trowel full of actual dirt into your oil fill gallery.
Edit: And for those of you who smell gas in your oil? You do realize that oxygen and gasoline are required to make the engine work right? And oil is there lubricating the combustion cycle right? So yes, you should always smell gas in your oil. It's normal. Question 2... did you smell the oxygen too? It's in there, along with a faint odor of.gas.

I had the gasoline oil smell until I changed spark plugs. All my passenger side plugs were loose not even finger tight and a couple on the drivers side were loose, but not as bad. Factory f up. I'd double check those spark plugs if I were you.
