First oil change at 600 miles supposed to be this dirty?

I watched the video and I do change my oil at 5000 miles, I didn’t change it within the first 1000 though. I should have and have done it on other new rides in the past but I failed to do it on this truck. Oh well, can’t go back in time. I noticed in the video he kept saying 5000 or 6 months. I fail to see what 6 months has to do with anything, I might or might not drive 5000 in 6 months, I’m still gonna change my oil at 5000 miles regardless of the amount of time that has passed.

The idea is to get the condensation and contaminates out. They say it become acidic and changing it at said mileage it six months is key

Okay, never thought of that. And if that is the case then you can imagine what contaminates are in the oil at 10,000 miles and a year has passed since last oil change, yikes ! But coincidentally I do seem to average around 5-7 months anyway between changes.

This is a highly debated subject on TW. That is why I sugested to set up a OCI that suites you and what you feel comfortable with.

Change oil at 5k, not every 500 miles, with 5 oil analysis from 5 different companies.

Stop being paranoid and just drive the damn truck.

You'll be fine. I have seen on this forum where new engine 1st change had dark oil like yours and others were clean. I did my first change at 1000 miles and the oil was a little dark and I counted 5 specks of metal in the filter. I always do the first oil change early on every new engine I buy, sometimes it's a nothingburger and other time's I've been really glad I did it.

First oil change on a new motorcycle can be a pretty alarming sight!

I kept my 1st Gen for 20 years and 3 weeks. I changed the oil in the driveway every 3,000 miles.

With the 2022 3rd Gen, I changed the oil the first time at 900 miles. You only get one chance to change the oil the first time early. It was dark.

I also changed the diffs and transfer case at 5,000 miles. The rear was dirty. The front diff and transfer case were clean.

Based upon that, I’d recommend changing the rear diff and motor oil early the first time.

Just my opinion…. And I change my motor oil at 5,000 miles. I enjoy it. Fumoto valve on the pan for me.

I have had that same philosophy with every new vehicle I’ve bought. An engine, a transmission, a differential, all create chips to some degree when breaking in. Oil is cheap, it’s best to get a lot of those chips out as early as possible.

Amen. Change it every 5k and forget the rest. You bought a Toyota to drive it. Drive it and don't worry. Online you'll find a "recommended" oil weight but going thicker won't hurt.

I hate that I didn’t do it to this new truck. Life got in the way. But I was aware to be easy on the truck as far as avoiding high RPM’s and excessive speed and excessive braking for the first 500 miles. Basically I was a slow poke for the first few hundred miles, lol.

I can understand wanting to do the 1st oil change a little earlier than normal, but 600 miles is excessive, maybe 3000 miles.

Time is as important, maybe more so, than miles. For the 1st 9 years I had my Tacoma I averaged 20,000 miles/year. I changed oil every 10,000 miles which worked out to about every 6 months. Since 2016 the Tacoma has been a 3rd vehicle for us and isn't driven as much but I still stay with the 6-month interval. I'm at 243,000 now and it still doesn't use any oil between changes.

FWIW, the guy in NC who put 1.6 million miles on his 2008 didn't keep up with miles. He changed oil once/month regardless. But it worked out to 8000-10,000 miles/month. If that doesn't prove that 10,000 mile oil changes are OK nothing will.

I did my first change @ 3K and it looked like that.
No worries, the second one comes out cleaner.

The oil did its job, don’t over think it. It’s a brand new truck covered under warranty, enjoy it!

One thing that is important to understand is that our engines are seated at the factory on a dyno. This is a very specific procedure that does not fall on the end user. The break-in we, the end users, experience is a bit different and generally 90% of it is completed by 500 miles with the majority being the first few hundred.

There is a reason why Amsoil specifically recommends changing the oil at 200 miles. How much this affects longevity I can’t testify too, but it makes sense to do it if you can. If you look up oil filter ratings I think you will be surprised at how much they actually don’t filter or their efficiency rate at a specific micron level. It’s actually kind of deceiving. This is the real reason why you want to do this, to keep that oil that’s metal saturated from circling the engine and creating microscopic scoring.

It’s what I did. First extraction at 200 miles, I did another at 700 just because I’m anal, another at 5k and then I will do my free change, bringing my own oil 10k. Love me some 0w-40 M1 Euro.
