    Hello All,

I currently have a 2021 Trd Pro with 560 miles on it, is there any sort of benefit to changing the oil earlier than the 10k interval for the initial service ?

Some brands recommend an oil change at 500-1500miles.

Anyone do a blackstone report to see if it is worth while ?

You’ll get a hundred different responses to this. It’s personal preference and beliefs. Just follow the manufacturer’s recommendations though and you’ll be fine.

Engine break-in occurs at the first 1000 miles per the owner's manual. If you want to change the oil at that time by all means do so (I did), but there's no requirement to do it per the maintenance booklet.

Well toyota is doing "Free" maintenance and if they are anything like BMW they will try and save a buck or two...

BMWs had 3000-5000mile intervals and post "free maintenance" went to 10,000-15,000 resulting in a bunch of gunked up engines...

Echoing what these two say. No requirement and it’s an old school train of thought. That said it was like 40 bucks. I did mine at a shade over I think 1200 and then around 5000, then 10000 and then onto the normal pattern (I’m at 18.5 now). Maybe it helped, maybe it didn’t. It didn’t hurt anything though even if it didn’t help. For an extra 80 bucks all things told. :notsure:

I had Toyota do my 10k service and the service primates cross threaded 3 lug nuts, I’m assuming by just hitting them with an air gun and not by hand at all first. It’s free service but, I’m still not going back there for it.

modern engines and oils can handle 10k. Toyota claims the engines are broken in already when shipped.

I’ve worked with Toyota engineers and Toyota as a company (small team but still). They’re not going to give a longer maintenance interval to save a few bucks. They’re one of the few companies that wouldn’t. But like I said above it is what it is. It’s free maintenance, that’ll never be a selling point for me again.

Really depends on the engine/application and how long you want it to last. Did toyota recommend shorter intervals before the "Free maintenace". Seems like they did...

Yea but changing the oil isn't exactly rocket science. Dealership techs should tend to be far better trained than a run of the mill jiffy lube, oilpan bolt strippers.

    I did mine at 5K, 10K, waiting until 20K.

Toyota's intervals aren't out of line compared to Honda or Nissan last I checked.
Same thing happened to Toyota in the early 2000s, just to peg the "lowest operating cost" scoreboards. Toyota has since learned its lesson...

End of the day though, if you live in an area with road salt, the engine even with negligent maintenance will outlast the frame...

Not really, they will overtighten the oil filter canister and strip the skid plate bolts.

NO question about synthetic being fine for 10k miles on a N/A engine. My question was more around the initial oil change as there is break in gunk from the new parts wearing in.

    What's road salt :rimshot:

My truck will have a very easy life, garaged every day, barely any rain and California weather.

Toyota used to do free maintenance at 5K intervals on the previous Gen Tacoma although I never used it.

When I bought my 2019 the dealer told me first oil change at 10K.
I just had the oil changed at 9700ml and the reminder sticker say next at 15k.

Affirmative. there are bad apples everywhere, usually some sort of review on the dealership of record does help (yelp/google etc)

I'm 'old school' ... With a new 2.7L and 1.8K on it. I plan on doing my own at 5K. It may not be 'needed', but a $40.00 bill makes me feel better.. And I'll let Toyota do all the other free oil/filter changes they want.
My basic philosophy is 'Too Often Never Hurts' ... Cheap insurance.

You’re also getting into synthetic oils vs traditional oils, and older engines with looser tolerances. 10k on a modern engine for an oil change is nothing. Obviously if you’re in mud/dust/salt and other heavy duty uses per engine manual, shorter intervals are recommended. But a normal daily driver, 10k is fine.

Well they do want your money... 3k OCI are a thing of a past as well. Once again my main curiosity was around the initial oil change not exactly the subsequent. I plan on doing 10k as that seems fine on this engine, as it is pretty basic, with no turbos/high revs etc.

In that case take good care of the engine - you won't be able to buy one after 2035!
