Yeah the service intervals are at 5K but the oil change is 10K so it makes sense that they want you back at 15K

The question is around whether or not the initial oil change should happen before 10k not the subsequent.

I agree with you .. Especially the whole 'break in' thing.... And I'm old enough to remember the 'break in' routine from the 60's/70's ... So I'm a bit tainted with what was procedure back then to what it is now... And admittedly, it's just been ingrained into me ... (Old dogs, new tricks, y'know .. LOL!) ... I still believe that you can never ever change the oil/filter too often. It hurts absolutely nothing.
    Especially after initial engine break-in.
Going 10k before the 1st oil change may be perfectly fine. But personally, if spending $40.00 and doing my own at 5K makes me sleep better at night? I'm all about that.

I have no issue with the 10,000 mile or 1 year which ever comes first. Just remember that you need to keep an eye on the level and color should you off road it regularly (more abuse, less time between changes)

Manufacturers are stretching out the intervals for oil changes, not just Toyota. Audi is also 10,000 miles or 1 year, whichever comes first. Oil and engines have come a long way since the "change it every 3,000 miles" mindset.
I guess this is where I like the Tesla, I've had it for close to 2 years and haven't done any service on it at all.

My 03 Tundra never burnt a drop of oil and it was a nice caramel color when I drained it. I replaced it every 10k or so even tho the booklet said 7500. Blackstone said go 13000 and test again but remembering 130k, 140k, 170k was so much easier than multiples of 13k. LOL
Now the Taco wants new oil every 10k and that suits me just fine!

I always do my oil around the first 500. I do it for peace of mind, get the break-in metals out, and honestly to get under there and give it a good look and finish my Fluid Film process.
I think the answer really depends on how long you plan on keeping the vehicle. The vast majority of Americans get rid of their cars before their engines go out, so I'm sure you *could* wait until 10k and if you're like 99% of consumers, never notice.
For me, spending $40 on a 30 minute fun job that gives me peace of mind is worth it imo.

From day 1 i changed the oil and filter at the first 1k mikes and then once per year thereafter which was about every 20k with mobil 1 synthetic. At 292k miles the 4.7 engine ran as good as the day owned.
The dealer did my 1st oil change on the new tacoma at 3500 miles. They claimed they were not obligated to replace the filter at that mileage...said they will at 10k miles.

This. My current motorcycle I did a break in at varying speeds and rpms and then changed the oil at 20 miles. The Taco doesn't get the same love though. The dealer I bought from provided an oil change at every 5 months or 5,000 miles - whichever comes first - for 2 years. So got the first oil change at 3,500 miles. I'll keep up with it for the first 20k miles then get complacent, like I did with my last Taco, and change it every 20k or so, whether it needs it or not. :) Just put gas in the tank and drive (it's a Toyota...).

I did mine at 1,000 miles. I know that's old school and isn't required, but what the heck. I got it done at the dealership for $40 with a coupon.

At 20k miles, the oil has a LOT of dirt in it. That dirt will get pumped thru the engine and wears down the metals.

The Mobil1 is a group III oil, making it no better than Kirkland brand.

If you plan on keeping the rig for more than 10 years, try using an oil with a true synthetic(group IV or V) base stock.

We've had two cars with long oil change intervals. Both of them, by 60k miles, started having weird issues. The VW started having turbo problems. The BMW had all sorts of top end problems. I'm never falling for that again. Oil changes are cheap. Do the first one at 5,000, then, if it were me (well it is me because this is what I do) stick to the 5,000 mile interval.

You gotta realize that almost all of us fall into the "severe driving conditions" category. Short trips, traffic, hot or cold climates, dusty and heavy loads... 10,000 miles is for ideal driving conditions.

Cali has "import controls" already in place for registering vehicles purchased out of state. You'd probably have to set up a numbered corporation with a mailbox in Oregon/Nevada/Arizona and register the vehicle there...

My maintenance schedule for oil is to do the oil changes on the normal factory intervals, but I change just the filter twice as often(about every 3k +-). Takes 5 mins to change filter on the Tacomas so it's not much effort. For a brand new truck most of the garbage/breakin is going to be done with in the first 1000 miles or so and I generally short change the filter right around then on new engines. I figure that synthetic fluids and manufacturing/material tolerances really have gotten a lot better in last few decades, but a filter change really is cheap and simple insurance.

I always follow the severe service schedule also if one is published since most cars really are used in a way that qualifies(short trips, city driving, etc).

1000-1200 for the first change, 7500-1 year whichever first after that.

Should also do trans, diffs, and transfer case at the same time for that first change. Quite a lot of junk will come out.

My dealer is recommending my first oil change at 16,000 Kilometres or 10,000 miles.

I want to keep my new Tacoma for a long time like I have with my previous vehicles.

I read a book back in the late 80's called "breaking it in right". It resonated with me if you plan to keep your vehicle a long time.

I did all of the break in stuff for my 1992 Toyota with the 3.0L V6 and it was still mint engine wise after 230k kilometres when I sold it.

I plan to do the same break-in routine to some degree with this new truck. However, I forget all of the many details now, probably overkill now these days.

I will look to take it easy for the first 2k miles. I will have the first oil change at 1500k kilometres or 1000k miles.

Overkill? maybe, but it gives me a piece of mind.

I always look to regular oil changes & maintenance to keep my driving trouble free.

Here are some recommended break-in practices here. (They do advertise their product in the article tho) https://www.holtsauto.com/redex/news/6-ways-to-break-in-a-new-car-engine/ They don't mention when you should do you first oil change.

I would recommend changing the engine oil for the first time at 1000k miles to make sure there are not any tiny metal debris or particles floating around in the oil and engine after initial engine break-in.

Just my 0.2 cents of an opinion.

I agree with the 10K with synth oils. I just.. Gut feeling ... It should be changed a bit sooner after initial break-in.
And a lot of us are set in our ways, right? LOL! And hey, $40.00 buys a lot of 'peace of mind' .. LOL!
As you say, a LOT has changed (For the better..)
Back in the day ... 60's-70's ... breaking in the engine .. you generally ran straight-weight 30w NON-detergent oil for 500 miles and then switched to whatever the mfg recommend. Usually a detergent 10-40 or 20-50 ...
There were some mechanics who tried to speed the process up... They take a brand new eingine, go under the hood and hand-rev the engine up, while gently sprinkling a tablespoon of baking soda over the carb. This was VERY hit-n-miss though. It either 'set' the rings up very quickly.. Or ... you were gonna burn oil over the life of the engine. Crazy stuff back then..
