This is probably hoing to be too long but I am losing my mind.

So, this is the first time I've self performed an oil change on my Tacoma. I've done oil changes on my other vehicles for years.

I watched a couple videos on YT leading up to the procedure. Someone suggested replacing the oil filter cap with the aluminum equivalent. So, I did. My first fuck up was I forgot to change the crush washer untile after I had put the plug back in and filled with oil. No big deal, I will wait til the next change and take care of it then.

Went to Home depot, came home, oil was dripping on the ground. What the fuck. Started taking everything apart. Realized I had also forgot to replace the rubber seal that goes on the outside of the oil filter cap and the little cap that you screw off first. Great, wiped everything off, installed o-ring, drove it around a couple days, started noticing oil on the ground. What the fuck.

So, I did what any sane person would do, I bought all the supplies to perform the oil change a second time. Someone had gofted me a magbetic GReddy oil drain plug so I had another part to install. Fuck it. $50 lesson.

Yesterday, took everything apart and inspected the aluminum oil filter cap and compared it to the original, plastic part. Sure enough, there is a small difference in the parts (see second photo) there is a notch on the aluminum part where there is no such notch in the plastic part. So, decided to reinstall the original plastic oil filter cap and return the aluminum one. I thought for sure, this notch is qhy oil continues to drip. So, went about the rest of the oil change. Pulled the old crush washer off put new washer and GReddy plug on. Everything screwed on smoothly, Im always worries I will cross thread something but, all good. Filled with oil and patted myself on the back for doing it right even though it cost me $50 in supplies.

Well, drove around this morning. Decided to look underneath and sure enough. Oil dripping around the drain plug and collected on one other low spot on the truck. Gave the drain plug another 1/4 turn and wiped everything down

Now, Im just really confused. Is it possible that its just residual oil still accumulating from the first fuck up? Idk. This truck is maling me feel like an idiot today.

Could you have gotten oil on your skid plates and it is still dripping down?

I just remove my trd skid plate so I can visually see everything. Like Jego said it could be spilled oil running off. Sounds like you did everything right. Sometimes the easiest jobs end up being headaches.

Get rid of all the bullshit everyone said you needed. Go to STOCK.
    You need oil, washer, oring.
Problem is you are trying to improve on a process a high school kid can do in his sleep.

I know a few people that installed the alloy cups and had issues.

Would think the residual oil may be from driving and coating components. Now it’s just collecting at the low points

I must admit, I’ve never changed an oil plug crush ring, I’ve never had a plug leak.

I have moved to Fumoto valves and love them

Shit happens, Did you lube the o-ring on the second install?
Did you remove the skid plate and clean after the first mishap?

Al least you didn't forget to put the oil in! :)

I got distracted once when changing oil in the FJ. I’ll admit, a few, like maybe five or was it nine Coronas were involved as well,…..but…

I forgot yo reinstall the drain plug. Dumped the new in. It ended up in the drain pan.

I wrote this off as “an oil pan flush and drain”

Yep, lube orings, dropped the skid plate. Wiped down all the oil I saw. I think (hope) its just residual that is collecting in low spots.

They really are a plus…..IMO. Topic is about as despised as MPG and the Gashole

Gave you found any residual under the plate again? Has it stopped? Might wash it out
