Many of us believe it is more conducive to engine longevity to do a 1,000 mile break-in oil change, which I did with my Tacoma and the wife’s new 4Runner. I even change the oil every 5,000 miles thereafter.

    Yeah, I went there.

I did my first oil change at 10K and have been doing 5K intervals since. I’ll report back if my truck implodes.

Watch some Youtubes by "The Car Care Nut" (expert Toyota mechanic) and others on extended oil change intervals (OCI). You'll be changing your oil at most every 5,000 miles for the rest of your life. Doing the 10,000 mile crap "might" get you to the end of the warranty period with no troubles, but likely not much beyond that. At 100,000 miles, rings start sticking and other bad things start to happen like oil consumption when you use extended OCI's.

I do 10K on my 1st gen. I'm pretty sure its not rated for it but it currently has 350K.

It has lived a long good life and is still my daily driver.

Because some folks need Prozac to calm their mind, and some need early maintenance. What ever works for you is the correct therapy.

That was popular back in the 60's when your pappy told you that stuff. They had dino oils, and the machining process wasn't anywhere near what we have now. It was a common practice to change out what was called a break in oil. Today these engines are already broken in by the time we get them, plus the machining tolerances are far more exact. They run a lot hotter, and cleaner, requiring synthetics with the latest additive packages. No longer do these oils get as contaminated from emission byproducts, or break down as yesteryears engine oils requiring those 3k-5k oil change's.

Thats total horsechit if you use good quality synthetics. Yes using a cheap dino oil will turn todays engines into sludge engines by 100k miles if 10k oil changes are done.

I was about to install a Fumoto valve on my 3rd gen SR5 V6, but decided against it because the skid plate on my model doesn't cover the oil drain plug, so it would not be protected. That could be different on other models.
