It is marketing, making maintenance cost appears as low as possible is an incentive to sell a vehicle. All the manufacturer truly cares about is getting you beyond the warranty period.

I think because Japanese Engineers have no idea what marketing team is doing lol. They design the truck right way, so it pops the maintenance light. However the perfect disneyworld dumb people live in is what Toyota Marketing team is pushing for at 10K oil change. And I don't blame them , they want to make money, its not their fault fathers didn't teach their children about cars.

People don't even know how to turn off high beams now days, do you expect them to know anything about maintenance ?

Exactly, but people are dumb. Common sense is not so common anymore, it should be called rare sense now days.

That's how I learned how to do some of the maintenance on my truck. The bigger issue was I didn't have the tools to do things so I wouldn't do it. But after getting the tools more can obviously be done on my own. And yes there are plenty of videos on YouTube, that's how I learned lol

So for the record, any douchebag that has never pulled an engine is entitled to an opinion...but a guy that probably does more serious wrenching before lunch every day than 99% of posters in this thread have done in their entire life is the guy that's full of shit?

It's foolish to assume every Tacoma (or other vehicle) owner is the same. You have guys that could assemble an engine blindfolded and guys that couldn't change a taillight bulb if Elon Musk was standing by them willing to sign a $500M check to see it happen. Some drive 300 highway miles a day, some drive 60 miles a day stuck in 95º traffic running the engine with A/C on for 5 hours to creep 60 miles. The variables are endless.

    TLDR:
    Everyone is full of shit
Nobody has the data needed to support their opinion
Most vehicles will survive even if poorly maintained because the manufacturers/engineers assumed only idiots buy/work on cars
The most anal about auto care/maint schedules trade before the warranty expires
87% of all statitistics are made up

I'm one of the few that gets their oil analysis done from time to time. A lot of other folks just talk. 10k synthetic changes have been fine in fact 12k have been fine according to the actual real information I've been given on my vehicle. The rest is just people flapping gums l, I don't pay them any mind at all.

I am so happy with my Taco! Did my first oil change at 400 miles and the oil filter looked amazingly good. The debris found looked chunky, no glitter, it's what you would expect from a brand new engine. Your engine has so many machined parts and it is so difficult to get them all 100% clean and free of chips prior to assembly. My next oil change will be at ~2500 miles and then 5000 mile intervals. Fumoto valve ordered and will be installed at the 2500 mile oil change cuz I made a mess on the garage floor.

For the record the Tacoma engine is very reliable and should last a long time if maintained. You won't find a lot of videos of the inside of a Tacoma engine. You can find engine failures of the Tacoma here at Tacoma world and else where by searching "Tacoma engine failures". We can't say the Tacoma engine is exempt from failure or never needs replacement. Engines need oil to reduce wear and we replace the oil to extend the life of the engine. Toyota provides a maintenance plan in the owners manual that supports their warranty policy. Maintenance is not free at Toyota so plan for the expense. My maintenance plan is not to help Toyota meet their warranty commitment. This thread is about your first oil change. Toyota's owners manual states oil change at 10K miles. My personal opinion is that this new vehicle is in the break-in period and I would want to change the oil before reaching 5K miles or (8K km). I can only assume that Toyota commissioned their new engines with an oil change at the factory. I feel the most important oil change is the first one. Then you can decide what maintenance you plan to do in the future. I can say that this mechanic does have a lot of experience with Toyota and makes you tube videos for profit. The information is free to watch and you can draw your own conclusions and or opinions. The Car Care Nut does have a bunch of videos on the Tacoma that are informative. This mechanic also has a video of a Tacoma engine being replaced and you get to see inside the engine, which is a rare thing. It also gives you an idea of cost and what other issues can happen.

I’m going back a bit! My father in law bought a 92 Toy 4x4 22RE 2.2efi, a year later I bought the same truck!
He was an old school diy hot rod mechanic! He would regularly go 12 and 13k between changes, that’s when Toyota recommended 7.5k, I sold my truck, but he had over 300k on his!
That’s after I packed so much snow up in the radiator hitting parking lot mounds and his daughter drove it 40 miles and let it idl, threw a belt and overheated then drove it a few more miles. It was only a few months old at the time. I trust the engineers!!

that's almost the color of a new filter...

I did my first oil change yesterday and my filter was completely black - like burnt toast compared to yours. :p
