These videos show the long term effects. Basically - the engine builds more gunk and varnish over the long term with longer oil changes. Its not rocket science, and it makes total sense. Oil is SO cheap compared to a new vehicle. If you change your oil yourself, you can actually change it twice for the price of taking it in once.

The filter interval is my curiosity, not the oil itself…

I'd say the data points to the opposite of what you think... millions of our engines out there and haven't ever seen one have an issue due to following Toyotas recommended OCI, Toyota says its OK and independent oil analysis says its OK. I have to ask... assuming you follow Toyotas recommendations what evidence do you have it will be an issue?

That would be interesting to see - but at that point, why not change the filter? I mean it take 2 more minutes, and costs like $4 if you buy them in bulk, $5 if you dont.

Only the evidence I can see in viewing engines that have been changes at 5k, compared with those that were changed at 10k. You can visually see how much better condition the engine is in on shorter intervals. The small nooks and grooves have less or no buildup in them, the small ports and channels are clear vs. varnished. There really is no comparison. I tend not to compare myself to the millions of people who dont properly maintain their engines, because those cars dont usually go well into the 200k miles arena. The number of vehicles that go to 300k is a small fraction of those produced.

I'm pretty confident in my OCI's - as are you. I'll keep doing 5, you'll keep doing 10, and when one of our engines fails we probably wont still be talking to each other.

Damn I say “curious” and I find the 60 year old oil change king of Saudi Arabia…

Relax I’ll change my oil at 5 as usual, but I’ll be dead before my truck so this discussion is mute…

Most likely oil made a decade or two ago is vastly different than oil made today. And synthetic oil is superior in every measurable stat than dino oil. So I wonder in all of these "teardown" videos what type of oil was used in the engine, what additives and 2-letter certifications the oil had, and if any external additives were used by the owners--that's a big part of it as well. Any synthetic can be used as long as it is ILSAC certified (per Toyota website).

FYI and FWIW, Toyota recommends changing the oil every 5K miles.......or 10K, depending on use. They list the criteria and OCI in the manual. For some reason many on here think Toyota recommends 10K OCI only. :notsure:

On my 2019 did my first oil change at 3k miles, 2nd around 7K, 3rd at 10.5 K. Now sitting at 11k+.

All in accordance with the Warranty & Maintenance guide, that is to say every 12 months. I had short drives when working and now retired so only short trips a couple times a week with an occasional hour drive. Pennzoil Ultra Platinum 0W-20, OEM spin-on can filter like God intended (2.7L).
I replaced my rear diff oil at 10.5K with the Valvoline bag oil just to see what it looked like and for fun, easy job with the quart bags and the first time I’d ever done that job. Dark but no shavings on magnet. Stuff smells don’t get it on you but fortunately I had been forewarned.

Yeah this is a great point. And the criteria for "extreme use case" or whatever they call it is laughable. Driving in dusty conditions, trips shorter than 9 miles, salted roads, with any load in the bed, driving highway speeds for 2 hours or more, operating on rough roads, driving in traffic. Essentially this is Toyota saying, if you drive your vehicle, use 5k OCI's.

The flat earth guy is no more or less credible than the "car care nut".

The flat earth guy has plenty of data. He watched his level the entire flight.

It's amazing really. The harder you watch youtube, the more "well documented" things start to become.

It scares me that you think the flat earth guy is "no more or less credible" than a lifetime mechanic talking about his trade. The key takeaways are: the earth has been proven round, by the flat earth society, countless times. If their "science" scares you like it scares me, then go off of the actual accredited scientists (who are actual experts in their field, like AMD is an expert on Toyota's) whom also say, unequivocally that the earth is round. Or, you can use your own brain and hopefully come to the same conclusion.

People like you legitimately scare me. Look at data, look at trends, use ALL of the information presented before you. Its OKAY to change your mind about things. Its encouraged actually - strive to learn more and more as you get older - not get dug in an rely only on what you've convinced yourself of.

I torn down my 2012 toyota engine (160k on 10oci since day 1) last summer and did not see any issue like you suggest.

Hey now this is TW get outta here with the facts. Most of us read the 10K number and ignore those little details as well as the part that says OR 12 months. Your gonna pizz off the “manual says 10k miles” guys.

I'm well aware and the reason I said to follow toyotas recommendation. I moved back in June and almost all of my driving is under five miles now and it gets cold here. So after 50k miles of changing at 10k I'm going to 5k intervals.

But the fact still remains. Nobody can point to an actual example of someone having an issue following toyota recommendations. It's always trust me bruh, you'll have issues.

When I had a brand new 2017 corolla, I took it into the dealership for its first oil change. One day not long after, I was hearing an intermittent beeping noise while going around certain corners, but whatever caused the beep didnt persist on the dash, so I assumed it was some kind of lane assist warning going awry. Turns out, the oil change mechanic at toyota overtightened the drain plug, which cracked the washer, and oil was slowly seeping out. The car doesnt beep at you until youre like 2 full quarts short. So I was driving around with low oil for quite some time. This is just to say that doing more oil changes than necessary raises the risk of someone screwing up the oil change and potentially damaging your engine.
