I did 10k miles for my first oil change and somehow my engine still runs.:)

I’ve switched to 5k shortly after that. Lots of dusty conditions off road, towing and carrying heavy loads in back of truck.

Waste of money. Don’t fall for their marketing. Use whatever is on sale and be done with it.

    I've been doing 5K interval oil changes...not quite 25K for total miles...since May 14, 2021. :)

NAPA has a sale on their oil - I think its made by valvoline, $18 for 5 qts, at least in denver. Picked up the supplies for two more OCI's last week!

I use that mainly because I can always get it and keep it in stock. My OCD hates it when I get used to buiyng a certain brand of oil and then I can't find it easily anymore.
I used Formula Shell with Bosch premium filters for years in my ZR2, then out of the blue Menards stopped carrying them. Pissed me off. Wally delivers 12 quart boxes of 0w20 Supertech right to my doorstep for free.

I agree, I think the oils are really good. The problem is everyone went to low tension piston rings. This can lead to blow by, and the gas breaking down the oil sooner than most would expect. If you're not planing to keep your vehicle long tern, it's probable not going to matter. If you are though...

Read the manual and called my local dealer. Both seem to indicate 10,000 miles unless you’re regularly towing or driving in harsh conditions. Modern engines and oils have improved a lot since the 1970’s and 80’s, I plan to follow the book.

Time is as important as miles. I have no issue with 10,000 mile oil changes unless it takes you 12+ months to go 10,000 miles. I think conventiobnal thinking is 10,000 or 12 months. When my 07 was my primary vehicle and driven 20,000 miles/year I did 10,000 mile oil changes for the 1st 180,000 miles.

The Tacoma is now a 3rd vehicle and doesn't get driven as many miles, about 10,000-12,000/year now. I'm probably still being extra cautious but I change it about every 6 months now. Works out to around 5000-6000 miles. I now have 243,000 miles and I've never added a drop of oil between changes. I use oil from Costco and Fram filters from Walmart. Brand doesn't matter as long as it is full synthetic.

FWIW this guy drove his Tacoma 1.6 million miles and used 8000-10,000 mile oil changes. This guy drove for a living and simply changed oil once/month. He didn't keep up with miles but it averaged 8K to 10K.

I drive 5,000 miles per year, or less.
My 2023 is my last Truck, plus I still keep my 1991 Truck (Hilux) just because it runs so well and is cheap to keep.

The link below is a nice and detailed look into VVT-i workings, and stresses the need for pristine oil.
My oil and filter plan is every six months, or 3,000 miles whichever comes first.

After dropping the coin to buy a new truck, IMO it is foolish to not pony up the modest $$ for frequent oil and filter changes.

    Thanks for the video link.

Got a visual as to why the rattle is heard first thing at start.

I'm a 5K oil changer and have done so for many years and will continue to do so.

    Happy New Year!!!

Many years ago, Dad wired in a 12v auxiliary oil pump into his Econoline 240 six.
It was actuated by the driver door open switch.
From the time the door opened, until he got into the seat and turned the key, the engine was up to full oil pressure.

The wear and tear occurs when there is no oil pressure at startup.
This is why I cannot fathom why anybody would tolerate the engine shutting off at every stop light.

Every time that I read on here that the Toyota engineers know better, I keep wondering how much longer it will be until my coolant crossover pipe begins to weep in a location that no one can get to without either dropping the transmission or lifting the body.
