Did you try doing a taste test whether regular, or premium fuel is in it?

Why would fuel type affect the color of the oil ?

Crappy fuel might not have complete combustion, maybe.

That’s fair but don’t need to replace them. Could just torque them to spec.

Normal for a 1st oil change. Combustion can get past the piston rings a little until they are they are broken in and fully seated.

My 4R (which obviously isn't a 3.5) has 500 on it, and it looks like i just poured it. I dont expect it to look a lot different when I change it at 1K. That oil looks unusually bad for that milage; break in or not.

true, but spark plugs are cheap, might as well replace them if you are getting in there.

OK, like a good boy I read all the posts before throwing in my two cents. Here goes: What did you do to obtain your oil sample in the photo? Hopefully you didn't drain the sump into a pan that already contained residue from previous oil changes! If you did then all bets are off concerning this thread.

Another possibility: Is somebody messing with your head? Did a "friend" substitute something in the sample jar? Did you perhaps leave it unattended on the garage workbench?

Just wondering and trying to help.

I decided to service the entire truck at 20k, because by then it was/is 6.5 years old and I live in AZ where summer temps are brutal on vehicles. The entire service with oem parts/fluids wasn't that expensive as I did the work myself. Plugs were only around $100. As I mentioned, I discovered the passenger side plugs were loose from the factory. Here's some pictures of the old plugs at 20k for fun...

Ah I didn't catch the 6+ years old. That makes a bit more sense. Plugs actually look pretty good still. Looks like different plugs?

^^This^^ As a few others have said, without actually seeing the engine in person, we're all just giving our best opinion, and we all know the old saying about opinions. On my '16, I did the first several oil changes but don't remember what they looked like or smelled like. I've owned a lot of vehicles in my life and did oil changes on them all, and also on company vehicles, and I've smelt gas in oil many times. I've rebuilt a few engines as well, and until things get fully seated, your going to have blow by. Now, being that thos is an expensive, new truck, nothing wrong with taking it to the dealership. As far as running it by some "higher ups", unless they were very experienced mechanics, which most likely they were not, Id not put much faith in that part of the equation. It'll all work out in the end, and I'm hoping that you don't have anything wrong and your trucks in perfect working condition.

That's what you want to see (on all counts)! The flashpoint (temp at which vapors from the oil ignite) is nice and high. A low flashpoint could indicate fuel in the oil.

No, changing your own oil doesn't void a new car warranty. Once upon a time it could (for some manufacturers), but laws were passed that allow you to have your oil changed by any shop or yourself without voiding your warranty. You just have to have supporting documentation.

Good points. To answer, I collected the sample directly into that glass jar about halfway through the draining from the oil pan. The oil did not touch any other surface except the glass jar and then the plastic jar that was sent to Blackstone. As for someone putting something in the oil, I mean it's possible but really unlikely. If anyone was trying to sabotage me, they'd have to have to have my keys and then pop the hood. If they went through all that trouble, they wouldn't pour gas in the oil. If anything, they would have poured something down the gas tank. Much easier to access. I think it's really unlikely that this was an act of vandalism but it does make you scratch your head.

I wasn't thinking "vandalism" as such, just jokesterism! I'm anal about many things and have friends - true friends - who would be perfectly winning to make a swap of oil samples to simply screw with my head for awhile! When I receive my new Celestial Silver SR5 in the next few weeks I'll be watching the color of my oil as I rack up the miles!

    1. It is not an expensive new truck. Maybe to you it's expensive but to the general population it is a cheap truck.
    2. You fuckers have way too much time on your hands to be worried about this stuff. Drive it, use it and maintain it per manual intervals.
    3. I just checked my dip stick. It smells a little like gas but mostly like oil. I have zero worries.
    4. This is not 1970. Let it go. Trust the engineers. If it fails, use warranty or insurance. You are not smarter than them.
