For those of you who change their own oil, when did you do the first change, and what interval do you use?

I am probably going to dump the "break-in" oil after around 1,000 miles or so, and then settle into a regular 5K interval. I don't like to push oil to 7,500-10K miles, even if that is the recommendation and testing proves that it is OK.

Also, the Toyota spin-on filter is 90915-YZZN1, right?? I see them listed for $5.97, which seems awfully cheap to me.

And do these trucks ship with synthetic oil, or do they use conventional for the break-in period? I am planning to use Mobile1 instead of the Toyota branded oil.

I’d wait until at least 3k miles to flush the oil out. Let the engine build up enough “debris” then change it. 1k miles seems like a waste of time as it’s still breaking in

I plan on doing my first at 5k miles. The filter number is correct and I paid about $4.30ish for them a few weeks ago when I got them on sale when I orders some other parts. It is a really small filter. I will also be using Mobil 1 just like I do on all the other vehicles I own.

A thousand is on the short side. Let her break in. Your filter is catching the particles; it's not like there's metal in the oil running through the engine.

The owners manual is a great guide. You can support your decision by a simple lab test from Blackstone

There is no 'break in oil' for the last few decades. There is an initial fill, if that's what you are referring to

Because you enjoy a lighter wallet?

Yes. Isn't the oil requirement written right on the oil fill cap?

Reasonable. But whatever syn of the proper API / weight that's on sale is fine. Even Super Tech

I did mine at 1k (sample submitted) and 2k, now every 5k. The 1k same shown as expected metals and silicon, so I’m very glad I changed it.

    I use Mobil1 XP 0w20 (6 quarts)

One TW member found this on his 24 oil filter, you decide, everyone has an opinion...

Thanks for the replies and the confirmation on the filter part number. And by "break-in oil", I simply meant the oil that ships with the truck.

I have built a bunch of Ford V8's and typically dump the initial startup/break-in oil after about 30 minutes on the stand. Then first change after about 1K or 2K miles. I do this to flush out any junk left over from machining and any assembly lube, etc. But I am certain that Toyota has a cleaner, more efficient engine assembly process than I do. Or at least I hope so. :)

Also, there used to be a common thought that engines should be broken in on conventional oil and later switched to synthetic. Reason being that synthetic was too "slippery" and did not allow the rings to seat. Although I believe this is an old wives tale...

Ahh, thanks to Thedudeabides22 and Tacowrench! That is exactly why I was asking!

And yes, I routinely cut open my oil filters. Always.

Yes sir. For CAFE 10k oil changes look better, but anyone who knows how motors work know you would be better off to change it proactively. Oil/Filters are cheap, engines are not.. :) Feel free to use synthetic.

How does a 10K OCI interval help CAFE?

Also, glad to see OCI threads are alive and well in the 4th gen section now too.

So the filter was working as designed to keep debris from circulating throughout the engine?

Yep, but why keep the contaminated filter in place, especially with metal shavings...

I usually do it after the first 5K. I'll be on a 6 month schedule with this one so it will probably be around 4200ish miles. Going to let the dealer handle it due to the rare, but possible filter thread issue.

I think that was me. I'm not worried about the dirt and debris in the filter I CAN see. I'm worried about the dirt and poo I can't see. The tiny particles that lodge themselves into itty-bitty crevices and cracks.

I did it at 750 miles. I'm sure you could go 5000 because pretty much everyone is doing severe duty equivalent mileage.

I'm doing the transmission at 5000 miles.

call me crazy but it kind of seems like "debris" is an issue these days.

Total cost of the oil change including the gasket, 6 quarts of Toyota genuine 0W 20 and a Toyota of genuine filter was $46.

Your new filter is "contaminated" the instant you start your truck.....

I do my new engines at 1k. I have found a large portion of the break in has been done by this point. Next is 4k more then every 5k afterwards. OEM filter and oil only. My son's '96 has almost three hundred thousand on the 2.4. Just replaced the head gasket and the internals were excellent. He has used OEM filter and Quaker State from the get go. It seems like quality materials and consistency has proven the key.

    Hopefully not with metal shavings...
