Continue to do this until you have a small trickle when you check you level in the morning. I believe you still have air in the system.

Yea, I agree with the air still in the system. The internal pump was still pumping when there was no fluid in the pan. It’s gotta have air.

Not a challenge but can you explain your reasoning why there might be air in his transmission?

He’s filled, drained to a trickle, topped it off and drained several times.
He’s driven it in between fills and drains, varied the gears while doing so.
He also let it sit for a few days.
The transmission is vented at the top.

What other considerations do you have?

    Thanks

First off I’m no transmission expert, I just try and apply a little logic.

I don’t think the op did a whole lot wrong other than the truck ran with a empty tranny pan for a few minutes. The truck was fine before he did anything.

So that makes me think it is a air in the system problem, like a air pocket in the converter that is displacing the fluid which causes shifting problems.

I don’t know if just changing or adding fluid can push air out. Maybe I’m way off base, but I think the logic is there. I wish @gearcruncher would say something about this air in the system possibly.

Agreed. I wish he'd quit "checking" the damn thing after he "checks" it!

He's checked it twice in the morning and had to add additional fluid. Either there is air in the system or he's got a leak. Fluid doesn't just disappear. Until he gets the amount of fluid correct he can't continue to diagnose the issue. I bet he would be upset if he took the truck in and it was a short on fluid.

There’s a zero chance of a leak that’s for certain. I’m not sure why I get no fluid, I mean NO fluid coming out after it sits and I check. But then I add fluid, recheck and drain what I put in. I’m positive my problem is a stuck or faulty solenoid at this point.

My wife is going to drive it to the gym tomorrow after I recheck the fluid level once again. I’m going to give it another shot, but it’s about time to get it to an expert I think...

At this point being disappointed is long gone man! If I had to get a new tranny then I’d be disappointed for a minute.

I'm not buying the " air in the system" idea at all.

I've drained and filled my 2nd Gen 3 times in the last 10 years. I've never had anything even close to this much trouble.

The fill procedure on the 2Nd gens is important, but it ain't that important. It was written so even an entry level tech could do the job.(no offense to pro techs intended)

Sorry boys , I was outta town and away from an internet connection .

As I was mentioning earlier in the threads , the A750 series transmission has a vent placed on the top of the transmission . All automatic transmissions as well as manual transmissions / transfer cases / differentials have a vent
The vent is designed to allow air out of the transmission , but not back in .
These vents can plug and when they do plug , you get a serious overheating issue as there is nowhere for the air expansion to bleed off . Your transmission turns into a pressure cooker when the vent plugs up . Keep your vents clean gentlemen !!

If any air was consumed by the transmission pump during the first couple minutes while she reversed the truck , the air would certainly be gone by now providing the vent is functioning as it should .
If the OP removes the fill plug with a plugged vent , the fill plug takes place of the possibly plugged vent and the transmission bleeds off any air to atmosphere .

I am also leaning towards a stuck solenoid .
Time for the pan to come off .

You can check the fluid level of these transmissions while they are hot , but you need the fancy tool from the dealer to perform the check .
That being said , good luck finding a dealer who carries the special tool kit to check these transmissions while warm . I think the tool was about 500 bucks directly from Toyota .
Why buy the tool? when you can make the customer wait overnight to get his transmission level checked

Thanks man! I’m planning on dropping the pan this weekend. I’ve replaced solenoids before in my old Ram (ended up being a bad tranny) so I know what I’m getting into. My question is, what exactly does “stuck off” mean? Is there a way I can unstick it or is that just a generic phrase??? Or do I need to test and replace if bad? P0746 Pressure Control Solenoid A was the first one to pop up initially on my scanner followed by P0771 Shift Solenoid E.

Thanks again for everyone’s time and input!

During a start up , the computer in your truck performs electrical checks of the solenoids in the transmission followed by a driving test .
If the computer sends a command to the solenoid and doesnt get an answer back , you get codes .
Stuck in the off position means the computer commanded the solenoid to stroke to the " ON " position . The computer didnt get a reply back from the solenoid , therefore the computer in your truck beleives there is a problem with the solenoid or valve body and sets a code .
In your case , always repair the codes in the order they appear . I am leaning towards a plugged solenoid or valve body issue .
Testing the pressure control solenoid would be my next step

    Look up your codes here
