Hello! I made a throw away account a couple months ago asking for advice on purchasing a used 1st gen -thanks for all the replies, BTW. To my amazement I found what I thought to be the perfect used Tacoma: <100k mi (64,XXX), 5 spd, 1 owner, clean carfax, new tires and alignment, had undercoating done to it, and as close to perfect interior and exterior as I thought a truck could be. The truck runs great and it's a blast to drive.

Any general tips on taking care of the truck? It still has the original battery in it, so I was thinking about replacing that. It also has about 3,400 mi since last oil change, so I was going to do that to. I read the owners manual and they recommend SAE 5W-30, don't know what the most popular is to use. Lastly, I live in Chicago but wouldn't mind taking a trip if anybody knows any good off-roading in the midwest? Thanks for any help.

That was embarrassing! Don't know if I can edit those pictures, didn't think they would be that BIG.

Nice find dude....an '02 with 64k miles??? Practically brand new!

    Congrats

As far as maintenance, I would keep using 5w30 like toyota recommends.

And because the v6 has a timing belt I would go ahead and change that out since its probably original, and the truck is over 10 years old...and do the water pump and thermostat along with all new coolant too.

    Thats about it!

That look a bit like the 02 I just picked up a few weeks ago, love the Lunar Mist paint! Mine had 94,000 on it, but it's supercharged:eek:. I'm gonna do the deck plate mod next weekend and fix the janky cup holder foam inserts. Good find, congrats.

I have done all the hi-pro mods for a life time, since I got this truck at a great price, I will be happy with showroom new.
    Congrats

there are lots of good tips here, but I would go through the whole truck and change all the fluids, make a checkoff list. and if its in your budget replace the fluids with synthetic, with the possible temp extremes up here it will make a difference.

and if you tune her up use only ome parts!
