Currently I drive a 2011 Camry :(. Whenever I depress the clutch to shift into higher gears, the tach revs slightly up, maybe 50-100 RPMs before dropping down. Even if my foot is nowhere near the accelerator, it still revs up slightly during shifting.

I was planning on ordering a '16 TRD OR 4x4 DCSB V6 with a 6spd manual, but the 6spd manual Camry experience has left a bad taste in my mouth about Toyota manuals now. I won't bother if the Tacoma the same issue.

I've requested to test-drive one at the local dealers several times over the last seven months, but no one has offered me the ability to do that since apparently all are sold before they arrive. If anyone in Scottsdale, AZ has a 6-speed and wouldn't mind going for a quick drive around the block, please lmk. Thanks guys!

    Hey there trailslayer

I'm going to take a wild guess and say you don't have much mechanical back ground. And you haven't driven a lot of other vehicles that are standard. When your engine is turning your transmission and you let out the gas pedal and push the clutch in to shift there really isn't much holding the engine back. So it will Rev up a little bit it's not abnormal for that to happen. And if that's enough to turn you off of a vehicle I suggest maybe you go look at a versa

Yeah, mostly just shadetree. I drove a '99 Ford Contour SVT before the Camry and I did all my own wrenching—new suspension (UCA/LCA/Stab bars/struts), driveshafts, brakes, UIM, LIM, engine mounts. Before that I drove a '02 WRX and only had to install a new radiator and brakes. All my vehicles have been manual, but none have revved up when I upshifted.

My GTO is a 6 speed. I gotta ask how you even notice 50 RPM? Are you going by the tach, or feel? Can you hear it rev? Anyway...I'd do some research on it before discounting a Tacoma. Perhaps its something they program in, like a "rev helper" to help drivers avoid stalling out. It could be user error, it could be a bad MAF sensor (the MAF sensor went out on my GTO and caused rev issues. Sometimes a high idle, or a rolling idle. $20 fix). There's really a lot it could be.

Bottom line, you're using a 2011 passenger car to judge a 2016 truck. Thats a big "apples to oranges" comparison, if you will.

Simple solution: find a manual Tacoma and test drive it.

I really don't understand why something so nominal is a big deal to you. Are you trying to hypermile this truck or what?

Also every time I down shift I always Rev match for engine breaking and save on the brakes...

I know what y'all mean, it's really lame but it's still so annoying. I can hear the rev slightly and see it on the tach, but can't feel it. It is the first car that has been drive-by-wire (solenoid actuator vs. direct cable link), maybe it has something to do with that? And yeah I'm slightly exaggerating that it would be solely responsible for decision to buy the Taco.

Yea, there are a lot of annoying things in life, and no vehicle is perfect. What do you expect? This truck holds an awesome resale value and is extremely reliable. Even if you find it does Rev 50-100rpm while upshifting, it's really negligent in the big picture. Just trying to put things into perspective.

So, if I can step in for a second, pretty sure its the same thing, its not an actual rev increase, its a rev hang. I dont remember the exact details, but Toyota built the rev hang in to pretty much all its manuals for MPG reasons if I recall. Something to do with maintaining revs for a second after you push the clutch in and let out the gas to burn off the extra gas. Something along those lines. If you drive it like a truck and shift it slowly, youll never notice. The only time I notice is when I'm trying to bang through the gears, and the only way to avoid it is to just pin it constantly and drop the clutch in each gear. Guess thats why I blew through my clutch in about 6k miles. But Im pretty happy with my URD Stage 3 now :)

Most all newer manuals do that, it helps to sync up the gears for the shift.

Interesting. This sound exactly like what happened with my Contour SVT. The guys over at Contour.org came up with a solution that I used for eliminating throttle hang by jamming a copper end cap with a drilled hole into the EGR valve's intake hose, thereby choking most of the exhaust air return that causes the throttle hang.

oh and just so I have something constructive to add, I've driven manual Toyota's for the last several years (2 Scions, 1 Tacoma) and none of them have done this, at least not that I've noticed. Now I feel compelled to look for it though..

I second what @VolcomTacoma said. It's called rev hang. I would be shocked if the 3rd gen Tacoma didn't do it.
Honestly most new (drive by wire) vehicles do this. My moms 2009 Jeep Wrangler does it too.
I actually like it for when I'm shifting slow. I only really notice it trying to bang thru gears but it's really not a big deal. Kinda pulls you down into the next gear lol

I'm intrigued that in 2011 you could get a Camry with a manual! Badass!

Mine does it, but it's really not that noticeable unless you're winding it up in each gear.

The delay in throttle response is way more annoying, especially when doing a quick rev match when downshifting.

Meh, you just gotta stomp on it sometimes :D

Yes, it is a relatively new "feature" found in many recent model cars and trucks and quite annoying to some drivers, including myself.
My explanation of rev hang with videos and charts is here.

Yeah I learned to drive using heel-and-toe downshifting to match revs. I think this is about emissions :/
