Also worth changing your engine air filter if it’s been a while.

Well, I would say 17 mpg is reasonable to expect going 80 on a flat road, bone stock. But like I said if your tires were under filled or your alignment was off that’d be enough. Or if you had a bearing going bad. Could be so many things.

From Redding to Medford there are lots of hills so that's probably the culprit

Gas mileage sounds about right considering your route and speed. I bet I would get the same mpg. 80mph is moving pretty good.

I bet you love that Traeger, haha. Check out the smoking meats thread on TW.

My mpg is that bad cruising at 80+ so I don’t do it anymore keeping it below 70 my mileage is between 18 and 19 that’s with a lift and 265 75 16. The 4.0 definitely has a sweet spot.

Ethanol free gas? May help with all the hills and higher speeds.

At 80mph I was totally moving with the flow of traffic. People were scootin'! I DO love my Traeger! I'm on my third one....not cuz they broke down....just upgrades.

Anything over 55-60 mph and you start to hit pretty big mpg decreases.
Figure a 1% drop per mph over 55, and more like 1.25% over 65.
    If you got 21 mpg @55mph, and were driving 80, that's 10%+19%=29%, 29%x21mpg=6.09
    21-6.09=14.91mpg if you're running at 80MPH.

    Stock, 4WD, Access Cab, White,
These trucks are about as aerodynamic as a brick barn door.

4WD carries alot of extra weight. Plus the higher ground clearance creates turbulent air drag under the truck.

I run at 70 mph on cruise control. Consistently average 19+ mpg. On occasion, I've hit 21 mpg.

    '06 Tacoma, 4.0L, AT, 4WD, ACLB with 115,xxx miles.

You can get better MPG, but you need to adjust your driving technique. Otherwise, the 14 mpg at 80 mph....sounds pretty normal.

I used to drive over 70mph all the time on the Highway, then I started testing out different speeds and learned that 68-70 mph is always the magic sweet spot between fuel economy and how fast you get there.
I started in 2008 and stopped testing in 2018. I had over a 300,000 over that time frame and tracked all my miles per gallon and cruise settings.

Every car on this list I’ve owned in the past ten years and 68-70mph yielded the compromise of speed and fuel economy.

Having a girlfriend who can pee in a bottle while in transit to avoid unnecessary stops will shorten trip times as well.

To be fair, one of these with a 4cyl, manual tranny, 2wd, factory low suspension, and keeping it bone stock can probably get 27+ MPG highway. But the owners of these trucks never come here complaining about MPG lol.
