    Hey guys,

I've never bought a new truck in my life, so on my birthday this year, I bit the bullet and ordered a 2023 Tacoma 6spd TRD Pro. It's due to arrive in August.

The Tacoma has always been one of my favourite vehicles of all time and Toyota off road vehicles are legendary. I strongly suspect it will be a classic since I hate the 2024 design. It will be much like the 3rd gen 4Runner or old Landcruisers.

So my question is: Are there must have options that the TRD Pro doesn't come with?

    Welcome to TW,

there are thousands of mods available.
But the biggest question is what are you going to use your new wheels for?
Daily Driving, Soft Roader, Off road, over landing/ FSR, rock crawling, or mall crawling

Welcome to TW. My oft-repeated advice is to take it stock, drive it stock, and let your life, habits, and needs determine what mods get put on it.

Out-of-the-box the truck is a highly capable, but general purpose tool. Any mod pushes it away from a jack-of-all-trades, swiss army knife type truck, and towards a single-purpose-specialty. Every mod gains a function, but it also sacrifices something to make that function happen. Which is why I say the above.

TW is a dangerous place. You'll dive deep into these threads, see all of the neat things people are doing and say to yourself "Hell yeah, I need that!" To that I say, slow down. Bring it home. Introduce it to your life. See how it fits. And then mold it to the gaps. Don't be the guy that has the permanently mounted traction boards that are cracking from too much UV exposure, and the roof tent that is rotting from too many car washes. Let the truck tell you what it needs.

Since you have a TRD Pro truck, leave it as is. It’s more than capable.

If you go off-road and feel that your truck is deficient in A,B,C note it down, and see what you need to change.

The only person who can give you recommendations about your new truck when off-roading is experiencing it first hand.

But I would do tires first, tires are king.

    Very helpful advice. Thanks!
Which tires would you recommend for 75% road/25% off road?

I agree with this - tires is all you need. The stock ones are crap.

Cooper Discoverer Rugged Trek is a good balance of off-road / on-road that look good too.

It's a 6pd - you just lucked out and got 20% more gears!

Hard shut off (press for 5 seconds) the traction control. It's the only mod needed.

    Go play. :mudding:

Must haves that don't come stock on the Pro are:

    - Power tailgate lock so your FOB locks your tailgate
    - Tonneau cover so you can secure your shit in your bed
    - Bed mat
    - Bed lights
    - Better tires
    - Tune isn't a must have (Kdmaxx for me) but will make it much more enjoyable to drive on a daily basis

    Welcome to TW

    Congrats and welcome.

Typically doing anything to the suspension or tires will make it drive worse and produce bad fuel economy. If you’re doing tires don’t go huge otherwise you’ll go down the rabbit hole of needing more power.

Keep it stock for a while and do personal touches that improve life. Tailgate lock, door entry scuff guards, elbow center console arm rest, center console organiser, good phone mount, ceramic coat, tinted windows… etc.
