First time doing my oil changed on my Tacoma....

    Doing oil changes on 3rd Gens SUCKS! Really makes me miss my 2nd Gen all the more...Was a 10 minute job with my Fumoto valve.

    The only annoying part is dropping the skid. Other than that it's a walk in the park.

    Yep. I made that mistake once. Made one hell of a mess. I immediately took out my Spyderco and cut the top off of it and turned it into a proper pan lol.

    That's why I had the dealership throw in a TRD Pro skid plate when I bought my 2020. Has the filter and plug access holes. No need to drop the pan now!

    If you plan on doing your own oil change, a fumoto valve helps. You can attach a tube to it and open the valve so no more spillage.

    I got the same deal sometime back...and yes don't forget to unscrew the pans plug, and aim for the hole.

    no no, there is some truth in what your father taught you... warming it up vs cold, I like that approach.

    what i was mainly refereeing to, in my past life experience at subaru, was more like a car that just rolled in off the street where the oil is HOT like operating temp HOT...




    youtube has some very entertaining videos covering oil changes, specifically cars that have gone many many many a thousand miles over their recommend intervals... sludge for dayz

    Oil formulations of our Dad's time did have a tendency to produce sludge that would settle.

    Today's formulation keep the stuff in suspension. Just do regular oil changes and all will be well without sludge developing. The only advantage with modern oil formulations is the hot/warm oil will drain more completely and quicker.

    I use a big deep stainless steel pan like you would see on a buffet line at a restaurant, works great. Plus I have always changed my oil when the engine is hot not warm. I think a lot of the contaminates are still in solution and will drain cleaner not to mention faster. Will do my first oil change on this Tacoma in a week or so, I’ll see if I can change it hot like my other vehicles.

    Oh wow, what a mess in this OP. But I can’t say it’s never happened to me. It only takes one, just one slip and you’re in for a long day lol!

    A good large pan as suggested will help mitigate spills, I use a large plastic tarp under an old flat cardboard piece for extra protection too.

    And I never change the oil when is hot at home. I let all the contaminants settle to the bottom overnight. Also, cold oil is heavier and may push/drag larger particles better, if any, down the hole.
    Be sure to open the oil filler cap and put a rag over it to keep anything from falling in as this will let gravity help push out the oil out and. Been doing this way for over 40 yrs on dozens of vehicles, no issues so I know it’s all good.

    I know the common wisdom is to change the oil hot, I’ve heard it all my life, but that sucks ass and could burn you. The pros do it because they have little choice and they’ve got the thing up on a lift and can get out the way in a jiffy. But when you’re on the floor, not so much.

    You’ll get the hang of it soon enough, but chances are it will happen again.

    Just did my first oil change on my Tacoma at 4950 miles. ( this is my first Toyota vehicle) It was a bit of a PITA compared to my other vehicles that have a spin on filter. The filter wrench I bought was crap, need a better one. I did torque the filter housing to 18ft lbs, drain plug to 30 ft lbs and the filter housing cap to 10 ft lbs. Drove up the rode and back without the skid plate on. No leaks. 6 qts of Toyota oil and Toyota filter cause it’s still under warranty. I’ll check the level after it sits for a few hours. Probably change to Castrol or Mobil 1 after the warranty is up. I might get one of those after market drain hoses for the filter housing, I didn’t like that plastic crap that came with the filter.

    Mine does the exact same thing, every time. It gushes out so fast it bounces out of the oil pan. Messiest oil changes of any vehicle I've owned. I need to figure out a better way to do it.

    My oil splashed out of the big drain pan also, never had that issue on any other vehicle. The sides were too short. I modified a 2 gal bucket for next time. It has high sides on it, I think it will work better.
