just get a blank metal key to open a door. Any good hardware store can copy your key.
Get a hide a key and put it inside the open part of the frame.
You think a thief is going to be looking all over your truck in every nook and cranny
    For a key?

You are way way over thinking this..

I have hide a key in all my vehicles.
I have a key on my boat ring in case a issue happens at a launch.

If a crackhead goes into my truck when I'm filling up they won't be a crackhead for much longer. Where do you gas up that this is a problem? I don't want to go there. I'd rather not have to go to prison for a crackhead.

    That's a lot of a lot!

I called the dealer and they said yes, the truck would have come with a flat key, just look in your paperwork, sir. I looked and didnt find it, but I've already decided to just have a flat key, hidden on the truck. I can get a copy made with no big deal.

But as always, I learned a lot of stuff I never would have known about. Thanks everyone!

And many many thanks to my buddy who dropped what he was doing and brought me my spare key.

Same. I used to attach one underneath all my vehicles with some mechanics wire. I slicked some grease on them for camouflage and to keep them from rusting too. Can’t say I’ve ever used one but it’s just peace-of-mind for me...

This is why I prefer manual locks. The truck can't lock the doors when it decides it want's to. You can also get in the habit of locking the doors with the key. Chances are not having power locks and locking the door with the key, won't leave you locked outside of your truck.

So just like Italy, France, Spain...? Over there they do it at traffic lights too, in and out on a motorcycle before you know it.

Black silicone the key to the inside of the wheel wells or underneath somewhere- it will be waterproof and totally disappears once dirt covers it. I forgot to tell the guy who bought my 4Runner about the key I hid underneath it - probably still there.

Similar thing happened to my little bro with an older Tundra. He was going to jump in the lake, but at the last minute remembered the fob in his pocket. APPARENTLY as he took the fob out of pocket and handed it to his gf, that actual metal key fell off the ring and into the water. I had just spent 30 minutes driving up the old fire road to cabin and had to go back down to try and rescue him, or at least drive him to cabin.
He called his daughter and she had to find the spare at home, drive 150 miles up to the local grocery store, give dad the key then turn around and drive home.
We took that spare key and it wouldn't turn the ignition :annoyed: It was after midnight and we were on "Old Cemetery Road" so I told him the ghosts wanted us to stay there, so we bolted.
Next morning we went down and the key STILL didn't want to turn. It went in fine, but no turn. Since he had backed into position and turned the wheels a bit, I decided to really crank on the wheel for the interlock, and VIOLA!!

He made a few more spare metal keys, and is putting one in his wallet.

My 2019 would auto lock all by itself. It was very frustrating. The dealer order me 2 separate sets of keys before the problem finally stopped.

People nowadays are idiots. You can't have one with out the other, power windows provide a convenience until they don't work which is rare. Power locks, there isn't much difference over mechanical locks most vehicles PL is power over mechanical. The only real exception is proximity key. Had that it was convenient, but no real advantage IMO I rather have a more compact fob, or even a standard key. Power windows, power locks, push to start, and power seats are things I would rather do with out on a vehicle.

I had the Toyota dealer cut some non-chip spares for me. $6 each. I had to provide my truck registration and my driver's license to prove I had a right to the keys.
They unlock the door, glovebox, and tailgate. They will turn the motor over, but the will NOT start the truck. There were not any consequences of me practicing that. I checked all three spares and afterward, used the chipped key to start up and drive home.
I do not have a fob nor any pushbutton start. Also an MT.

My 1985 Honda Accord, otherwise known as a Middle Class Mercedes required the key to lock the driver side door.
You literally had to put the damn key in and turn it to lock it -

My 87 Prelude si was the same. Impossible to lock yourself out by accident.

I want the dumb metal key route and hid it in a magnetic box in the open frame part. Fortunately never needed it so far but did the same with my old Jeep and needed it.
I had a local locksmith make a plain key with no chip for $3 shortly after I got it.
I'm not sure I'd the OP 23 sr5 has push to start or the H key. I didn't think the push to start would lock with a the key fob inside but seems it does. My 2020 still has the H chip key. I know you can't lock it with the key in the ignition. I even tried locking it with the engine running with my spare fob and it won't. I tried even locking it to warm up the interior in the winter by locking the drivers door manually and I remember it will unlock if it's running. I need a remote start too I suppose. Funny because I could lock my old Jeep with another key fob like that. Toyota definitely has it program to try to not lock you out still as we see it's possible

Go to Ace or a Locksmith and have them cut a blank key without a chip, zip tie it somewhere hidden on the frame. I have one such key ziptied hidden on both my vehicles. Do make sure to secure it a small enough ziptie that can be accessed and cut with your pocket knife easily, if you have to use wire cutters to get the key your up shit creek when your tool box is also locked.
