Not a good year for ice fishing here. Which is good for me because that means the ice will clear sooner and I can get out on the lake earlier :D

This is the first year in 3 or 4 that we have had really nice ice this year. I love being out in my boat, but I might like ice fishing a little bit more.

Lots of variables...how much you want to spend, what fish you really are targeting, need to read up on your fishing rules/licensing etc. Some folks here are on the coast, Im more inland fisherman but basics are the same;) line, hook, sinker (sometimes), bait;).

also familiarize yourself well with some good knots. Palomar, and Berkley knot are super easy.

i do saltwater and freshwater fishing but the rod and reel setups are a little different for shore or surf fishing. i know semi basics for it med, heavy rod, liter etc, just looking for suggestions on the equipment part. mostly we get perch, mac, halibut, and a couple smaller sharks where i fish the most.

A buddy of mine is a fan of Penn reels and they have a saltwater one I believe. Make sure you rinse off your rod/reels after surf fishing otherwise the salt will destroy them. I dont have much to offer on what else. Im sure good 50-80 braided line would be good.

Anyone have any recommendations for surf rod reels? I need one more as my 20 year old shimano gave out on me last fall. My wife got me a couple daiwa emcast's in 5500 and 6000 which are massive reels. I have them on a 12 foot and 10 foot rod. For $36 each they seem pretty decent and have used them a few times. I have a MH 10 foot that I need a new reel for. Not sure if I should stick with the emcast or go to something else? I have lots of other hobbies so I'd like to keep it under $50. Thanks in advance.

Emcast is a decent reel and should pair well with your 10MH rod. If you plan to fish braid you can probably get by with a smaller reel say a 4000. For about $100 you can get a Daiwa BG Saltwater, which for my money is by far the best bang-for-the-buck reel out there. Super smooth, oversized gears, big line capacity.

Here’s the most popular and most recognizable surf rod reel of all time. It will catch pretty much anything and is the easiest reel in the world to take apart and clean. The Penn 704/705. They can be found used on eBay or stripers.com. I collect and use them more than any other reel I own. They can be dunked and even after years of use they run like a top. Can’t remember the last time I used a modern reel. Plus they can be customized if you’d like. Change out the drag washers to carbon fiber and you’re good to go for a lifetime with one of these. Don’t waste your money on the reels built today. There’s a reason why these are still around after 30-40 years. B3F35A67-552C-4925-8869-CAFFE8B0938A.jpg

I live in Florida and almost only use old Penn spinfishers that I've modded. They are bullet proof and easy to repair. If you dunk on in the drink it's not an issue to clean. I will say the drag output is garbage for big big pelagics but my 712z can humble almost any inshore game. I converted all mine to manual pick up also...bail spings suck

I'll look into them and may bump my budget up. It would be tough for me to stick a $100 reel on a $30 rod... my kayaking inshore rod/reels are much better quality than my surf fishing stuff just because if I'm lucky, I hit the surf 5-6 times a year compared to 200+ hours on a kayak.

I'll look at them and see what type of price I can find. I certainly appreciate it.

I appreciate it and will look into them.

Beautiful custom. I’m a lefty so it’s a little tougher for me to find right hand retrieve older penns, but almost every one I come across in decent condition I buy immediately. E2BC8820-C9B9-4188-8D27-1400DE7FF4BE.jpg
