Got this one last week. My electronic scale was on the fritz, but I'm guessing 5-6 lbs.

No pictures of fish, as I was fishing more than catching. Did catch, but nothing impressive. :(

I was out last night after dark looking for big blue cats. No luck. But the lake was glass smooth - no wind at all, and it was a joy to be out in the middle of it at night.

So I'm looking into getting a kayak and figured this would be a good spot to post a question. I'm going to try and take a break from tacoma mods but I think we all know how that will go lol  I'm looking between these two:

    http://www.walmart.com/ip/32333502?productRedirect=true

    and

    http://www.dickssportinggoods.com/product/index.jsp?productId=3986135

This will be my first kayak and use it mainly fishing in rivers and small lakes. Which out of these would be best? Also can these be put in the ocean? Thanks in advanced! :)

Definitely get a sit-on-top for fishing. There's no way I would take a sit-in kayak out in the ocean, if you were to get swamped, there's no getting back in the thing.

Check out the Ascend FS12T from BassPro.

I fish out of a Native Watercraft Slayer 12. Found it on CL for $600, so look on CL as well.

I would definitely go with a "sit on" for fishing. I would determine the length/weight based on how you plan to use it. I fish freshwater, mostly canals and lakes, and I have a Malibu Stealth 10 ft. It weighs in at about 55lbs. If you plan to salt water fish or take it on the ocean, I wouldn't go anything less than a 12-14 foot kayak. The weight will depend on make/model.

Personally, I'm not buying a cheap yak that I will be taking in deep water. I also have an Onyx inflatable pfd

My cousin has the walmart one, its fine for lakes and rivers. He went with me where you see me with flounder, it was okay at initial launch for him. Once it started getting windy and choppy, we turned back around as he wasn’t confident in that particular kayak. Also, the plastic on the kayak is a lot softer & thin than most kayaks available. Also, he replaced the “seat” with a yak-gear seat, which is beyond night and day. As mentioned, the longer the kayak 12’ or more is good for saltwater and open bays where it gets rough.

What type of waters to you plan to take on? Also, is there an Academy Sports store near you? They tend to have best prices and carry mid-range branded kayaks.

Thanks for all the replies! I did however post the wrong kayak. I definitely want a sit-on-top.

This is the one I was comparing:

    http://www.dickssportinggoods.com/p...6.4413993.4417832&categoryId=58554346&fg=Type

I plan on using it for mostly rivers and lakes but would like to try it out on the ocean as well. There isn't a Academy sports where I live unfortunately :<

I've tried craigslist but no good ones have popped up. Found a few but they're not sit-on-tops and some are selling for 1,000+ lol. I was sold on the walmart one until I seen the Dicks one fully loaded.

I would get the F&S Eagle Talon over the Walmart one. The Ascend FS12T has a better seat for the same price, but if you aren't close to a BPS, that may be out. I did see some yaks on eBay for good prices with free shipping when I was looking for one for my wife.

I have the field and stream. I would definitely buy that over the Walmart one hands down. My buddy made the mistake of the Walmart one and returned it after the first outing. The field and stream is a good starter yak. The only thing that isn't good on it is the seat. Needs a higher back, but that's easily replaced for $40-50. I replaced the seat on mine with the Crack of dawn high back. 2yrs into it though and I had to splurge for something fancy so that is my guest yak
