Heading down to the Florida keys for a week of kayak fishing in the middle of march. Has anybody fished down their previously via kayak(no plans for deep sea fishing)? This is our first time down there, hoping to be catching a lot of the mangrove snapper. So far been reading up that live shrimp is going to be the best bait to use for the mangroves. Any tips would be appreciated.

Not a kayak but it is a small plastic fishing boat. I just purchased this 10ft Pelican Bass Raider from my local Dick's Sporting Goods for $699. I was saving for a nice fishing kayak until i saw one of these online. It's rated for a 3.5hp motor and weight capacity is 600lbs. This is a stable little boat. I wanted something small and light to take with me on camping trips. The state parks where i camp have stocked lakes. Can't wait to get this thing outfitted and hit the lakes.

I found this same boat online for a $100 bucks cheaper so i drove to my local Dick's Sporting store with my receipt & a pic of the online ad on my phone and they refunded me the difference.

I picked up a new fishing kayak this Sunday! A FeeFree Lure 11.5! I can't wait to get out on the new boat this weekend, after fishing from a cramped 13.5" light touring boat, this sit on top/ stand on top yak will be awesome! I need to rig up an anchor trolley, and when it comes in, set up the rudder.

Here it is sitting in the back of my Tacoma. I just got the truck two weeks ago, so i was hoping transporting this would work well with a Harbor Freight Bed Extender. It was super easy to tie down and very secure for the 45 min drive home, mostly at highway speeds.

My truck came with the cap and roof rack, but this beast weighs 74 lbs, so I don't want to have to put it on the roof.

This is my old set up: A Perception Carolina with three rod holders and an anchor trolley. This worked great for a long time, but it was time to upgrade.

I bought the sea ghost 130 last year with the upgraded seat. Don't quote me but I know it was less than a $1000 closer to $900. I was ready to buy a Jackson until I found the Vibes. Great yak! Believe it is rated at 550 lb, which is great. I really researched fishing kayaks before I purchased it. I have only took it out a few times, but it seems to handle great. The family and I are headed to PCB, Fl. this June and am thinking of taking it for some fishing. I bought mine from a dealer in Charlotte, NC. So far I am impressed.

What is everyone's favorite way that uses an anchor system? I don't know much of the trolley systems, but am considering the best way to mount a rope lock for an anchor. Normally I fish rivers.

Hey man! I actually kayak fish the ocean and back bays so I don't use an anchor. I tried in the beginning of my kayak fishing days at a bay train tressel, I had a colaspable 3 prong anchor. During tide change the water rushes through so fast I wanted to stay in one spot. Well when it came time to move I couldn't get my anchor back, had to cut the line. Sucks to bring excess weight on the kayak but I would recommend the round weighted anchor for less chance of getting snagged on bottom.

But I gotta ask you.. How old is your dog and where'd you get him!? I swear he looks just like my dog and could even be from the same litter.

I fish rivers here in PA and I have a mushroom anchor on a trolley. There are tons of trolley options but it is basically a loop of rope that can change the anchor point to change the direction your yak is facing

The mushroom anchor is fairly light and just a cheap one I got from Walmart

Tie your line to the bottom of the anchor and run the line up the shank and use a small zip tie to attach the line to the top eye. If it gets hung up, pull hard enough and the zip tie breaks and the anchor will fold and come loose.

Round anchors won't hold as good as a folding anchor that can dig in unless it is way heavier. I keep a 3lb folding anchor in my kayak.

Indy will be 1year the end of this month. I bought her last year from a guy in Greenwood, S,C. Good dog, but she can be head strong.
Also like the setup you have on your Tacoma.

I'm starting to consider a trolley, though not familiar with them. I got one of the anchor rope locks on my flat bottom and really like it. I am trying to figure out how to mount it to the yak. Though using the lock you would be limited to one direction while anchored. Thanks for the info!

My yak came with the trolley, so I'm not sure how a aftermarket one would be rigged

Although I'm sure there are tons of options

This summer I was going to look into different anchor options

I would love a way to slow down the yak a bit without actually stopping it. This summer I was thinking of trying a drag chain

Never done it in a yak but a neighbor of mine who has a bass boat swears by them

Definitely get the 12ft sit on top ascend. 10ft is too short IMO and you definitely want a sit on top for fishing, especially if you plan on doing any btb. One wave over the bow of the sit in kayak and you are swamped.

Late getting started. First bass of the year. Our local Corp-run lake is going to be kept about 3-6 ft. below normal this year, so fishing might be a little tough. Not that it was ever great to start with.

Me and the family are on vacation down in Panama City Beach,Florida. Got to searching and found a very reasonable kayak guide, CHILLIN CHARTERs, Kayak Mike. Got a lot of trout. Then he put me on this redfish. Thoroughly enjoyed the trip.

I realize this is a month old post, but if you haven't already gotten something, i'll second the 12' sit on top. I got two of them a little over a month ago for my wife and I. we use them about twice a week and love them. when we both go out, it's just to paddle around and have fun with the dogs. when I go out alone, it's to fish. great kayaks for both instances.

extremely stable to the point that you can stand up and cast from them. they do dip the bow in rough water quite frequently, but they drain super fast, so it's not an issue. seats are also extremely comfortable, and are even designed to pop right out and use for a beach chair, if that's where you intend to paddle.

they look huge on land, but as soon as you toss them in the water with you gear in it, and take a seat, you'll realize that it's the perfect size.
