Fishing out of a kayak?

I can't believe I forgot to mention this. Regardless of what PFD one chooses, WEAR it, no excuses. They aren't a fashion accessory and could save your bacon when things go bad. Just like wearing seatbelts.....

 

I don't know what a flipper kauak is so I'll defer to your experience on that. I fish, and if my Feel Free Lure 11.5 rolls then shit has gone horribly wrong. I have a SOT so you couldn't stay it it if you tried in the event it capsized. The best life vest is the one you'll wear and that fits what you do.

 

I'll just leave this here. Snook just after sunrise. Not mine, but a friends in local waters.

Took me a bit to understand your question. My initial reaction was, you get wet
Serious answer is they have a doohickey in the cartridge area you remove that keeps it from auto inflating when it gets wet and you just pull the little red thingamabob to manually inflate it.

 

Sorry I mean to say “manage a flipped kayak”. I mainly fish in open ocean and I fish off of a pro angler. I’ve seen many pro anglers and similar sized kayak flip.

Basically it is far easier to right a capsized kayak and get back on wearing a traditional pfd then one of those inflatable sitting around your neck.

I guess if you only lake fish then it’s less of a concern. My last trip was 2 miles off shore hooping for lobster at 1am.

In the ocean something terribly wrong can be as simple not seeing a 4 foot swell coming at you at a bad angle while your core is leaning toward the other direction.

On a side note I also carry a a personal beacon, flare, a secondary gps and a marine radio as a safety precaution.

 

The only time I'm really at risk for capsizing is on the river getting pinned against limbs. I do jump in sometimes on the lake (without the vest) to cool off and have no problem getting back in over the side. I don't think my yak would stay on it's top if it tipped over but I'll have to try it sometime and see if it's hard to flip. In scouts we woul intentionally flip a canoe on the lake and right it and bail it. Not with 4 foot waves though . I just know I wouldn't wear a full life vest in the summer heat here.

 

What's your guys opinions on feelfree? I'm looking st one of there paddle drive yaks

 

I have the Lure 11.5 and it's a solid yak for lake and river fishing. Very stable so you can stand and fish and the adjustable height seat is nice. I thought about adding the peddle drive and it's a cool design but it's pretty new and I was waiting to make sure the design is solid based on the reviews before I buy cause it's expensive at about a grand. There are other makes like Hobie and others that have had the peddle drives alot longer if you don't river fish. I prefer river fishing for SM, often down very shallow sections, and I don't think peddle drives are well suited for what I do. I will say their customer service has been outstanding in my experience.

 

This whole discussion made me think of that duck boat going down on Table Rock lake. When I first saw the videos of that I thought they must be on the ocean.

 

Apologize if you answered this already -- what's the make/model of your vest? Looks perfect.

i think it will fit nicely right next to the Kayak in the bed. Hopefully if i ever get a bed cover it all should fit under it.

 

Depending on the size of your rods and if they are one or two piece, using a rifle case (foam padded) works great for my freshwater rods and reels. Economical and the rods and reels are well protected.
