Fit Cam X Dash Camera

Wish I was smart enough to put one of those in my truck.

 

Did you get the rear camera and how did you mount it? I am very interested in this system. Such an OEM+ style front camera.

 

I have just the front camera for the moment. Rear will be added at a later time.

 

Anyone got pics from the rear camera? Curious as to what the quality/view are. Gonna get the front but debating if its worth it for the back one.

A 4K cam with OE fit powered by a Novatek NT966670 w/ wifi, 4K and h265 format for under $250. That's pretty compelling. It's good to see the website added technical details to their page since the last time I checked.
If you want parking mode, you still need to buy the hardwire kit, probably $30 which is what most brands charge
Wifi at 2.4GHz is slow if you've ever tried to transfer video. Hopefully, the settings allow you to choose video clip size by time

with this setup, I worry about heat since it's using h265, and it's pretty taxing on the processor

 

The app does allow you to choose the size/length of the video you want to record

What is taxing on the H265 processor exactly? The heat from outside the truck or the normal operation of the camera system?

Thanks for sharing. I wish I would have known before I installed my Rexing. This is exactly what I was looking for...something that looks entirely factory. I just bought a 2019 GX 460. sadly, they only make these for 2020+. Oh well, it looks like I will just pick one up for the Tacoma and move the Rexing to another car. At least the Taco is already hardwired for the motion detection feature

Each format process info differently and results in file size and bandwidth consumption. h264 uses macroblocks, and h265 uses coding true units (I don't have detailed knowledge on either macro or CTU). h265 is more efficient, which means file sizes are smaller and have less bandwidth, but this comes at a cost where higher processing power is required to record/stream in this format.

To have a good quality camera, you have to have the right combination of hardware and firmware.

Lens quality
CMOS type / brand
CMOS size
CPU quality
Other hardware - Like wifi, voice commands, LTE capabilities, GPS, impact sensor, microphone, speaker, etc..
Firmware

Lens quality - Type of glass and how the glass is fixed is a factor. Some manufacturers use glue to hold the lens in place once it is focused. The problem with this is the heat softens the glue, and the vibrations from driving cause many lenses to come out of focus. BlackView was notorious for this years ago. This is cost cutting tactic where a lower quality lens and or lower manufacturing practice is used to keep the price point lower. This applies to the rest of the list below

CMOS type/brand - Some of the better brands will provide tech details of the brand

CMOS size - Some better brands will provide tech details like MP size and aperture size. Some brands will only highlight the front camera specs because that's tied to the better camera. Most dual cams are 4K front and 1080p for the rear, so they'll have different apertures and MP sizes. Not a bad thing, but transparency goes a long way.

CPU Quality - Brands that use lower-end processors will start to have problems recording due to the stress of constantly running on high CPU processing. Prolonged heat produced from the CPU reduces the camera's life, and that's if you're not already having problems where it's not recording videos at all. The novatek listed for the fitcam is a popular processor that many good brands use, so that's a plus.

Other hardware - There's something for everyone and what you're looking for regarding features. These features will drive the cost up depending on what you want. One really important thing to consider is the form factor or design of the dash cam. Some brands won't want to spend the money on R&D or may not have the funds to create a new shell, so they start cramming more hardware into a small space. This results in more heat and thus reducing the life of the dash cam.

Firmware - This is something that is easily overlooked. You can marry all of the best hardware together and completely ruin it with crap firmware with a lack of support/updates for the firmware.

There are three qualities, but you can only have two. Cheap, Reliable, Performance. Among several brands, VIOFO, BlackView, StreetGuardian, Vantrue, etc, they all sell 2-channel dashcams with 4K + 1080p rear, but not all of them will provide detailed technical specs. Brands that provide very little detail, especially no mention of firmware, or lack a firmware download page with a change log are a deal breaker for me.

Overall, the specs look pretty good for the fitcam. The price is right, and the OE fit is extremely appealing, but I will pass. No info on firmware. I am not impressed with the screenshots I've seen. Even though it's got a great processor, I think it's a cheap lens. It's like you have a great truck, but the stock tune is shit.. oh wait.. Ships direct from China, so there is no distribution stateside, which means delayed support at best and bad support at worst.
I'm also going to call bullshit on their R&D because it's not that hard to clone plastic trim and fire up CAD software to modify the trim to hold your camera.

 

How’s the picture quality at night? It’s a dash cam not a go pro I just want to be able to license plates at night.

 

This is tempting. I was debating on the Garmin Mini 2 also….

Does the cam allow you to set WB (white balance) for each camera? And, can you adjust the camera angle in the front, or is it fixed?

 

The front camera is fixed. Its already been adjusted to the perfect angle though in my opinion
