Fitting 33" (285) spare

It's nice to have 5 matching wheel/tire combinations and do a 5 tire rotation. When the inevitable wrecked tire happens you can replace it with a like tire and run it as a dedicated spare.

 

^^ This. I like the piece of mind of being able to comfortably complete a road trip or trail run without worrying that my spare will mess something up because it's smaller.

For those of us on 285/70/17s it's as simple as keeping the 16" spare wheel and mounting a 285/75/16 on it.

 

Man that’s a sweet stance!! Been trying to find some aftermarket wheels that’ll fit this set up on a 3 inch lift. Currently looking at 16inch wheels with 4.5 backspacing and omm offset

Agreed it's not the best. It's on open differential though. It's how cars are able to run donut spares. I'm not saying it's ideal. Neither is having to put on a spare tire lol. Off roaders use space saver spares often. Not trying to argue at all. I personally would rather run a size smaller than none at all (if it won't fit). And if the 285 hangs down below everything else, I'd prefer the smaller tire as well.

 

Running 255/85r16 and the spare is 285/70r17. Close enough in size to me just a little wider.

I didn't feel like paying for a new tire. If it's free it's me

 

Yes but the spare is only an issue on road for me. Off road it mounts on the bed rack so it doesn't get hung up on shit

Yes i did relocate it. Wilco makes a bracket to relocate it, but i didnt want to pay for it so i made my own out of angle steel and steel flat bar

I have 285/70r17’s on my 17’. falken at3’s all terrain and it went up without hitting exhaust or diff. Has about 1-2” from exhaust. It is weird how some have issues

 

Just unbolt the tire chain and drill 2 new holes to move it back and rebolt it just like @Hodakaguy did here. I plan on doing this to fit my 285 75 16.

I ran into the same problems. I had a Curt class III receiver hitch that set back even further than the stock hitch I think. I am running 285/70/17 BFG KO2s and the spare is brand new (32.8"). Anyway, I was hitting the hitch and diff before the tire even got to the brackets. I opted for a Pelfrey rear bumper with built in hitch. Cut the exhaust so it dumps just aft of the rear axle, and smashed the brackets to horizontal. Fits great with room to spare.

 

So I went ahead and mounted my 285/75/16 used spare BFG KO2. If you simply lift the spare then yes it will hit the diff and the exhaust.

However if you hammer the two guide brackets out of the way (as others have mentioned) and tug on it towards the rear right as you have someone else tighten it snug, then you have room. I hammered the driver side bracket all the way up but left the exhaust-side bracket out a little as there's no need to hammer it all the way up since it sits above the exhaust.

I don't think that the spare sticks out from underneath too much when it's all done.

I was looking at it today going to just relocate the chain most likely

 

I bent the tabs with my hammer and bought a used 33inch tire that was lower in tread (fits easier) to use for the spare. Figured if I needed it on a bind I wouldn't need a ton of tread anyway. Plus only cost me like $40 mounted which was great considering I didn't want to spend good money on something I barely would use.

 

Fits fine for me. 17x9” on 285/70/17 Ridge Grapplers.

 

@Hodakaguy didn’t you have a super easy method of just drilling two more holes for the jack and use the existing rear holes over again?

 

Right? One person can have the same clearance same wheels and rub all day on 33’s and another can have the same exact set up and not touch at all. Lol
