2 super old school ideas :

    1. self made leather boot

    2. stretch a section bicycle inner tube over the clevis to the rack

who cares if it pinches it will still keep 99% of the crap out and if it is a cheap disposable solution that you can replace by just removing your tie rod….

I would rather use a cut up shock boot. I'd be worried a bike inner tube would get pulled into the rack and cause more issues.

Sounds like the tundra rack would have been a much better solution for you.

yup good point the inner tube might be too flexible and get caught on the teeth, do you think a shock boot could be stretched around the OD of the clevis ?

I was thinking tundra rack with no slide rack then you could use boots and eliminate the problem for the shit he drives in.

100% correct. I'm drawing this from circle track racing. Hydro assist/full hydro racks are common place there. I'm not sure that tapping or splitting off the stock rack would work on the OE rack for an asssist ram. So I was thinking using a pass through orbital/servo to direct the fluid to the ram would work. It's the same as an orbital for full hydro except the steering shaft goes all the way through it to the rack so you still have mechanical linkage. Now you can get different sized valving and different steering shafts to tune the feel of the steering with them.

I have the howe pump and slide rack here waiting to go on, along with everything else, but am now thinking it might not be the best solution for our climate up here, especially with the salted roads in winter, and all the creek/river crossings and mud etc we have. Might have to sell the kit and go with the tundra rack after all.

I assume the Howe pump would still be just as beneficial using a Tundra rack

Hm, i learn something new everyday, never knew a orbital like that existed. I came across some circle track stuff when researching full hydro, lots of useful information out there from those guys.

I think if you pressure and flow tested the outputs of the stock rack you would be able to determine if you could run the ram off it or if you would need something like a pass through orbital.

FWIW, My slide rack hasn't seen a bit of salt and my drivers side is rusted real bad and its starting to develop some slop. Right now I'm faced with 2 options. Make it work somehow, or move on to something else. Really would like for it to work. That's my ultimate goal.

the way I understand it is the howe pump is its own entity, so it would still be beneficial on a tundra rack. The guy that made my rack has a howe pump on his truck with a tundra rack.

You could put the howe pump on a prius if you wanted too. The rack it goes to makes no difference. Though the fittings may be different on the tundra rack, so what JD sends may or may not work. But fittings are easyish to source.

It should be the same as the existing hoses on the tacoma bolt up to the tundra rack

Slop is developing in the wheel. I can post some pictures after work. My shafts are all tight so my assumption is dirt is eating away at the pinion. I actually have almost 10k on this setup.

Or you have worn out your steering shaft as that’s where the load is being transferred to
