May 22 to 25. Here's the planning thread.
    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/2020-great-north-woods-may-22-25.630132/

If you're coming up from NC I'd suggest spending the night of the 21st near Philly to pick-up the convoy heading north the morning of the 22nd.

    It's true, I'll do that

do you have any concerns with removing a flex point? now that the bearing point can no longer flex, i feel you might have caused a stress riser. anytime your truck articulates its going to put a lot of strain on that part. normally the bushings flex to help with that (or a single jonny joint)

Alcan makes a joint similar to his set up just much larger. I would think a johnny joint would work as well.

those can pivot. vs his that can not.
the alcan and johnny ones are like this. This is more hard mounted with the double bearing.

Oh I see what you are saying now:thumbsup: Like the 2 uniballs kinda cancel each other out.

Zero concern, this design has been used for years. The springs still have bushings and the leaves have plenty of twist when you run a real spring pack. The advantages to the uniballs are no squeaky bushings and they don’t split and break apart.

can you show me where in offroad this has been used? that leverage is being pushed to another part. sure the leafs will flex some, and the other two bushings will also flex, but you replaced a part that was designed to have more rotational moment with something that has zero movement.

I am sure it will work for now, but for how long? I would need to work up the fea analysis to see the next failure point, but i would bet it would be one of the mounts or the welds on the shackle.

its hard to tell from your pic, but it looks more rockcralwer then go fast. I could see this lasting longer in a desert truck, but no so much in a RC. I never use poly because of that exact reason, with the amount of flex the truck sees, it kills poly, but rubber lasts a much longer time.

Look at every 7s truck that’s ever been built. They have been doing this for decades. This is on a tundra that is used in the desert, not the rocks. Also you want the rotational force directed into the springs not the bushings as they will start to bind and impact the quality of travel. And with a 9” shackle the deflection caused by bushings will push the shackle into the hanger causing it to bind and cause a whole different issue.

A real spring pack has zero issue with the setup. Stock springs or those junk Chevy springs people use are a different story

Deaver, National etc... 10-12 spring pack that uses thin leaves

So you’re telling me swapping a Chevy 63” spring pack designed for a full size truck swapped into a mid size truck won’t work well?

I’ve frigging hated this idea since I heard of it. I’m fighting wanting ride ht with performance and carrying capacity with my own truck and 11 leafs but dealing with it the best I can. Shock tuning has done wonders but I can still feel the valving fighting spring rate

Alcan builds some nice packs but 63’s straight up suck and anyone that thinks otherwise is in total denial and trying to justify not spending money. Yeah you might get a little more flex but the ride is awful.

Unfortunately you are. Try a 62” Deaver pack, it will change your life

IMO, the longer spring may be a benefit on other trucks but if I were going to do it I would still get a custom leaf pack so you’re not really saving money.

1st gens are a perfect example of poor factory leaf pack geometry that may benefit from longer springs.
