That's what I'm looking at getting a 2500-3500 mega cab but a 4th gen. Most wheeling spots for me are 5-10 hrs away so having a bigger nicer trailer with small living quarters is starting to appeal to me for some more creature comforts.

Clarify: Is that no mods on purchases of new vehicles or all purchases that are new? Could you purchase a very slightly used and mod?

Even mods that would make towing/hauling much easier, safer, and comfortable?

Oh and whatever you get make sure you get the OE brake controller. The aftermarket from what I can tell no longer offers the controllers that tap into the master cyl and proportion the trailer brakes off fluid pressure but the OE ones still do. It's a much nicer and better way to handle the braking IME.

This was brought up in deliberations and the consensus is a new or new to me vehicle could not be modified for a mandatory minimum ten years. Believe me I tried. The objective from the defense was to stop the rabbit before it goes down the hole and a new vehicle would be less likely to be tampered with.

I’m getting every tow tech package they’ve got on whatever I choose. Don’t care how gimmicky. Been backing up trailers since I could drive and haven’t gotten any better so what’s to make me think I’ll wake up one day any better at it?

Oh I wasn't talking about cameras and all that, I was talking about braking. The OE brake controllers are far superior to any aftermarket ones IMO. As for all that nonsense for backing up to a trailer and hooking up and backing up to one or the blind spot mess is just wack. Mirrors is the only way to go all that mess makes people lazy and reliant on that vs actually knowing how to really haul a trailer.

I guess that means one thing. You have to buy the vehicle already built/modified.

Hey I looked at suspensions and stuff for the Dodge I haven't bought yet

I'll probably be buying a one way ticket out west and driving it back. Damn cattle ranchers own all of what I want that's in decent shape.

    Too many to remember
Here is my two cents on the whole tow rig deal...

I have always had a tow rig since I was 16yrs old and now at 35 nothings changed. If you are serious about abusing your truck off road then a tow rig and trailer is absolutely necessary.

I’ve always been a GM guy and have gone through a half dozen 2500HD duramax trucks. I like GM trucks as they are cheap and easy to work on if need be and the duramax/Allison combo is flawless. The downside is driving a 4 door 2500HD everyday gets old, especially down by the beach in San Diego.

I went though a phase where I had a couple raptors as tow rigs and they we definitely better daily drivers but then I started modifying them for off road and completely lost sight of the fact that they were tow rigs.

The other thing to consider is the trailer it’s self. Flatbeds are cool but do nothing with regards to camping. So instead I have a 32’ enclosed with a living quarters up front. Problem with that trailer is that it’s heavy as hell and a pain in the ass to deal with. The solution to that problem is also owning a flatbed for the day trips or things like dragging the truck across town to the dyno etc.

While I like the idea of having a 1/2 ton full size truck for a daily it will never tow my big trailer so I’m stuck with 2500’s.

My current solution was to also buy a cheap daily driver which has been awesome, great MPG, easy to drive/park and run around in.

It’s pretty funny how my off-road truck necessities a 2500hd, 2 different size trailers and a daily driver.

I know I’m rambling but just trying to share my experiences with regards to the quest for the ideal truck/tow rig situation... good luck!

I think this is why I’ve narrowed in on the newer f150. Probably the V8. Doesn’t seem like adding turbos and crazy shit to smaller engines is a recipe for longevity. Can tow 12k, so a 5,500 lb taco and 3k worth of trailer and tools will be fine. Not interested in hauling a camper or big set up like you have. Just want to get the truck to a park comfortably. I feel like the f150 would be fine as a daily driver since I’m always making Home Depot runs or local deliveries for my business and it’s not gigantic. This is small town Alabama after all. Everyone’s in a truck and always room to park.

It’s become cumbersome riding around on MTs and I know which direction the truck is heading and it’s not going to make the daily driving experience any better. I may have backed myself in a corner, but even stock the taco can’t do what I want out of a truck for working on the house and transporting the tractor etc. It was never pleasant hauling anything in the taco.

I've been towing the MonkeyCrawler to Johnson and Lucerne Vallies over the years with the Tacoma. Been pretty solid with no problems really, has plenty of power going up the Cajon Pass. Only thing that sucks is braking. Highly recommend a good brake controller and a WD style hitch. I'd feel totally confident towing with a SUA setup as long as there is a WD style hitch. But in the long run, I agree that a dedicated tow rig is ideal..

one weekend I'll be doing stupid shit in the crawler like this..

and the next weekend I'll be doing stupid shit in the Tacoma like this.. My Tacoma has been through a lot of shit and wear and tear over the years...still going strong though..

I just want to get a 30ft gooseneck to put a 10’ camper on the front of. But right now goosenecks are either non existent/6 months out or 20k+…..

Why get an enclosed trailer when you can just make the daily an overland rig. RTT and all that good stuff. Overlanding is for men.

Dats my plan but a little longer one to be able to haul both the taco and the XJ or a buddies rig etc. It makes dealing with parks easier if you limit the # of tow rigs and trailers for your group.
Having shower and a shitter especially for my daughter is a big thing for me especially in some of the parks we go where there isn't any amenities other than a field and some woods. Yeah all the overland crap is cool but when you can have a much more comfortable place to stay especially with the kid it makes the trip far more enjoyable and doesn't completely ruin things for them especially if the weather is far from ideal. If it's just me that's one thing.

This is what I want to make but with a much much smaller living quarters and a much larger deck for hauling rigs. Will get overlanding credit with the outdoor kitchen and stuff and definitely getting a skottle.
Or just get a big rig and make a damn ramp truck and trailer for it
