Been awhile. Life got busy so I haven’t been on the forums for months.

Finally took some time to start modifying the Pelfrey bumper and finish making a skid plate after doing the JD Fab relocation. Basically coping what Harry and the guys at JD have been doing for extra ground clearance.

Hoping to have this wrapped up by tomorrow and I’ll grab a piece of aluminum early next week to make the skid.

Will you be adding any more bars to the lower section perhaps one in the center?

What I've learned being a diesel tech for Ford is the smallest bit of contamination in the reductant tank will take out the entire system..from the NOx sensors to the DPF filter substrate. Make sure the filler neck and spout is absolutyl clean when adding DEF..

Not following what you mean by “the lower section.” As of right now, I’m not planning on adding any more tube but may in the future. Kind of just want to get it back together and see how everything works out.

The DPF stuff is a total nightmare. Hell, if you drive a newer Cummins you’re lucky to make it 20k without a failure. It’s absolutely unbelievable how trashy the new ones are. They used to be so simple and now it’s nothing but an electrical nightmare.

The skid plate area below the bumper mounts in front of the trans cooler lines. You have two already extending from the frame ends down to the corners of the LCA mount cross bar. I was thinking halfway between those two.

Or maybe an "X" tying into the two that already exist at the frame and corners of the LCA mount cross bar.

I thought about adding something there but it wouldn’t be structural so I’ll probably use smaller diameter tubing. The only real purpose would be to provide some back support for the skid plate. I’d prefer not to add a ton of extra weight.

The two “V” tubes currently in place give the frame support and there’s already a cross bar for lateral movement.

Plus serviceability, so you’d want to make it removable which is another level of complexity. Me, I would just leave it and have extra skids on standby and just replace as needed.

@81Trekker any reason the uca double shear wouldn’t work on a 5th gen 4Runner? Trying to sort through the missing pieces of the wife’s build. I know the spindle gussets will work

I’ve got a 2020 and I’ve put 20k on with zero issues. I’ve got two tech buddies who work on rams and haven’t really seen any issues with the new trucks.

I’m sure a very large portion of the failures we see are directly related to the cold. I just know they are a huge problem here. Cold ass weather will test parts heavily. But the manufacturer should also be testing in these types of conditions as well.

I will never own another modern diesel motor again. Nothing but emissions problems for me that ruined the ownership experience, that all happened conveniently when the warranty on the truck ended. When you take costs of fixing those problems in to consideration, along with the additional complexity of diesel motors in general (turbos, inter coolers, direct injection, etc not even mentioning DPF, particulate filters and emissions junk) and the $10k premium at purchase for the diesel motor, you'd need some serious fuel savings to justify the cost, but I never saw much in the way of fuel savings in my 6.7L F350. I couldn't see much over the mountain of repair bills, though.

That said, when I need a truck to be a truck, I wouldn't think of putting a half ton truck to work with all the fantastic heavy duty trucks available that make towing so much safer and easier and are almost as comfortable unloaded as they are loaded these days. My next full size tow rig will just happen to have a big gas motor in it, though.

Has anybody looked into carbon shocks at all? They appear to be pretty legit with a significant price difference over king and sounds like quick turn around times too.

They're similar to Locked. I'm pretty confident they're built together.

Carbon builds the shocks for Locked. Pretty sure they are made internationally. Someone else will have to confirm.

I’ve never torn a pair apart so I cannot speak regarding quality, etc. I’ve heard questionable details from other parties.

They claim they are made entirely in the US. Their instagram shows them building every single component at the very least. I also see zero similarities between locked and carbon.
