I’m keeping my eyes open. What’d you end up going with? Anything that would fit my truck would fit my tractor, so I’m good there. 16’ maybe? Thinking the shorter the better.

Mines 18’x8.5’ with drive over fenders. I found the standard width of most to be 83” and Betty is right at 83” wide. So I had to fork over $6k for a new trailer versus $3k for a nice used one because the 7’ wide ones are way more common.

Wow 16’ might be too tight then. I was hoping a 7’ would work. Would hate to have no wiggle room driving on the trailer though.

It’s mainly because of my backspacing. 3.5” bs with 9” wide wheels and LT means plenty of poke. But I agree that having some wiggle room is nice. I would want more than a couple inches of margin if I could. And I agree 16’ would be a little tight.

Haha I’m sure it could be done. Convert the fenders to drive over with some 1/8” plate and add some extensions on the side. Wouldn’t be worth it though imo and would make more sense to just buy what you need from the start.

I mean if it fit right on the c-channel couldn’t you do d-rings and strap over the wheels easily? Maybe add a bit to the sides just for some margin and if the wheel decides to shuffle to the side it won’t fall off the trailer. But if the overall widths are the same I guess it’s not worth the effort.

I originally wanted to do straps over the tires until I talked to others in the LT thread about where they hook. Two straight back off the rear axle and one off of each LCA angled out to the front corner and she didn’t move an inch over the last trip which was 800 miles round trip. Like I said though, I like some wiggle room. I want loading the trailer to be an easy process and I don’t want to have a thin margin of error. That’s just me though which is why modifying an existing trailer wasn’t even a thought in my mind.

Edit: plus a wider trailer gives you more options for towing other rigs if that comes up for some reason.

Always secure vehicles using the tires or Wheels. Do not compress your suspension with shackle binders, straps or anything of the sort. You want the vehicles suspension to give and sway and absorb the energy transferred onto the trailer from driving manners. A set of axle straps and wheel straps will be the most secure DOT approved method of securing a vehicle to a trailer. According to DOT for transporting a vehicle you must have at a minimum of 4 secure attachment points and a backup safety chain.

Where on the LCA did you strap from? I’m guessing as close to the tire as possible?

Also, I got my GED in trailer building science, man. Gotta put my degree to work. And like my motto, why do something once when you can do something ghetto?

Do not secure to the Lower control arm. Secure the tire with a tire or wheel strap. Why would one want to put unnecessary stress on suspension components?
If it’s your side by side or own mower sure do whatever you want. But mess around get a sick head state trooper or DOT officer pull you over and I promise that they can be the biggest ducks you’ve ever met. I have transported vehicles on 2,3,4,9 and 11 car haulers for hundreds of thousands of miles both wrecked and in good shape vehicles. Transporting a vehicle is a different game than any other junk out there.

16’ leaves no room to tie down but it was a killer deal for a trailer.

Do you guys put it in neutral and parking brake on if strapping at an angle that pulls the truck forward or back?

Who said I’m strapping sprung weight? By strapping the axle tube and lca the suspension can still do what it needs to do. Besides, I asked in the LT thread and this was the unanimous consensus, harry included.

in the pocket of the LCA.

I put the truck in gear (manual transmission) and parking brake on. Me tightening down the straps moves it a negligible amount so it’s not something I worry about.

I love it I have the 3.5 ecoboost with the 10 speed, I was able to do 80 from northern Colorado to Moab on 3/4 tank of gas going 80mph over the mountains. Tows great, comfortable great gas mileage. Like 19-20mpg all around and my round trip towing to Moab was like 15mpg

also I tow with it in neutral, manual, and brake off

That’s good to hear. I went with the 5.0 V8. 3.31 gears. Anxious to see what it’s like towing.
