That's nicer than some OE applications. I dig it. Being Tupperware it'll last a few generations too.

Any modern alternator will handle and maintain an AGM just fine. So I’m not sure where you’re getting that. But I’m done going rounds on this topic. Also, the Interstate AGM’s I sell are 4 year free replacement. 6 year pro rated. So if paying full cost for an AGM every 7 years bothers you, then idk what to say. But any reputable brand is going to come with a pretty solid warranty.

It's pretty well documented here that you have to do some modifications to allow the Tacoma charging system to maintain an agm properly. There are lots of threads on the subject. Here's just one a simple search would show many more including having to tune a 3rd gen to achieve.
    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/the-northstar-agm-battery-voltage-booster-upgrade.604478/

Warranty arguments still don't do well for your cost argument because you make the same argument for lead acids and still come out cheaper.

Pick your poison, I guess. Personally, I'm an AGM guy. They can't be beat in life span or performance. I guess I've been lucky to run a completely stock charging system on mine with absolutely zero issue. When I tested it in November its lost 10% capacity over its 4 years. And that's with an alternator that is working way too hard to keep up. But that is getting replaced with a 270 amp soon.

Most vehicles with lead acid inside run the vent tube through the floor, But the vent is pushed into the battery case its self in many cases.

I’ve had good luck with mine too. I think the first agm battery lasted me about 4-5 years. This current one is coming up on the same. Even started up fine after sitting on the garage floor for a year while I had my front end stripped apart for all the JD goodies.

sorry said helium instead of hydrogen. Ha. Okay I will just vent through the floor then. Just was thinking if the gasses it produced were lighter than air then venting down wouldn’t do anything.

One big perk of an AGM where I am, is cold weather performance. It can be -30 and crank exactly the same as if it were 70. Lead acid batteries are noticeably weaker in cold conditions. I also believe the slower discharge rate is what has kept my alternator alive this long, so in a sense it is easier on the charging system.

Costco agm battery isn’t too expensive. Maybe I’ll just do that so I don’t have to deal with the venting thing.

Cool thing is you already have a nice tray you can use instead of buying a box. It simplifies things a lot to not worry about venting or anything else.

Which tray are you referring to? I still don’t think it will fit under the hood.

You can still use the JD tray elsewhere. No reason it has to stay under the hood.

That’s true. I didn’t even think about that. Lol. Still not sure where I want to put it in the cab yet.

Thats the tough part. There aren't many places it will fit really. I think when I do mine, it might end up under the bed.

I think it’s awesome. Would definitely put a smile on my face to fill it up. Will probably last longer than factory plastic, too. Ready for the Tupperware radiators.

Wouldn’t you want to put it in a box if it’s under the bed anyways though to protect it from mud and such? I am really hoping I can find a decent spot for it in the cab somewhere. We will see

I'm thinking about making a box that would essentially drop through the floor of the bed with a door on top to access it. Depends how ambitious I get.

You guys must have some really tall batteries. I have the large battery tray with a battery that's about a half inch taller than the tray with the top and my hood clears by about two inches. It looks worse than it really is because of how the underside of the hood is shaped. I latched the hood and could see inside without the outer fenders on to make sure it clears.
