To put it in perspective a proper 4 link around here is a huge snowball and can rack up a $40k bill in a heart beat. $10k for shocks, $10k for rear end, $20k in labor and that’s before a fuel cell which goes from $3-10k. Then you have plumbing etc...

~$3k before shocks. I think I have around $3400 in my setup because I got a deal on shocks. This was prior to the Deavers going up though.

No doubt, that’s a whole different beast though and not even in the same league as what we’re talking about. Or, at least what I’m talking about. All I was saying was in reference to the other comment which talked about a basic link setup for mild stuff, where it doesn’t need to be a perfect setup.

I thoroughly appreciate the front lip on the LCA seeing as I drag these all over the place. And on the same note, how tucked up the LCA’s are compared to other kits on the market. If you look at some others, you notice a huge gap between the LCA and outer CV joint.

Is your time worth monetary value to you? Mine is. Just time alone you would have 10x the amount of work making a link setup that’s actually proper as opposed to bombing a full SUA setup in over a weekend.

Also, unless you axe the ass end off what are you actually gaining over a solid SUA? Not a whole lot to justify it…. At least IMO.

That’s not what we’re talking about though, you can’t bring that into a conversation when saying something is cheaper than something else. Speaking strictly the cost of parts, the two are comparable.

I was actually more talking about a trailing arm style link setup. Not a crawling setup. So my statement absolutely still stands.

The entire conversation sparked because someone said a “basic 3/4 link setup for east coast use” and you said an “SUA setup is significantly cheaper”. So in that regard, I would say you’re incorrect. A more involved setup with trailing arms would absolutely cost more, we agree there.

When links are brought up in this thread. My head automatically goes to trailing arm link setups. So forgive me on that one. And I still don’t think you’re doing it for “around the same price”. My bet is you would be 5k deep minimum on a basic double tri 4 link. And the only reason I say that is I’ve been down that road before.

Is that even a thing? Don't think I've ever seen a SUA sas front on a vehicle

I know some stock jeeps are SUA on the rear at least. Never looked close enough at the front :notsure:

I also don’t think SUA or low hanging trailing arms offer much for folks that crawl. Rock bouncers are about the only ones I know of with trailing arms and that’s a totally different sport.

There are some guys running the BK/TMR architype trailing arms that are triangulated some as compared to desert stuff. Even if you look at TCs new buggy with leading and trailing arms that are billet the way they set them up compared to ultra4 desert etc is different than around here. There are some guys that are crawling in WERock with IFS/IRS but it's totally different than the other offroad IFS stuff. Even the bouncer stuff doesn't do well on trails like rattle rock they over heat and the stalls are totally wrong.
My point here is there is NO "right" or "wrong" way of doing these it's what's best suited for your locale and how you use your rig.

Anyone considering links is stupid. Try building a 4400 ultra 4 Tacoma on leafs like the rest of us

Just a reference for a basic trailing arm link setup, I have $700 in steel cutting my own brackets out, $500 in joints and tubing, and shocks are $2200. I feel that’s comparable especially when you can buy all these brackets from ruffstuff including trailing arms. But iv got a small plasma table and welder so I’m doing all the work myself. I get the rabbit hole you guys are talking about but it doesn’t have to get that crazy. Tons of budget link options out there, especially a short corse link set up or just a single shock trailing arm in general. I learned a lot going to just one ultra 4 race on how un necessary alot of these things are that you guys are saying is included in a “rabbit hole”. I get a high speed luxury pre runner could be a rabbit hole but most of the people in this thread just ride forest roads and feel the need for a trophy truck level suspension lol. Not hating just throwing some truth. For most people they are not gonna notice a difference between a setup like this and a full back half with bypasses and 32” of travel.

I would highly disagree, you can setup trailing arms to be pretty high up if you choose shorter arm and sacrifice up travel for link separation and not hitting the bed with your upper links.

a damn jeep with a long arm setup hangs lower and drags on more stuff then @81Trekker’s SUA.
