I’m really happy with how the cage turned out. My buddies biggest concern with the entire build was safety because accidents happen especially off road... even going slow. I know a lot of guys think a cage of this level is overkill for this build but his point was it’s a super cheap life insurance policy for him and his family.

I really also like having the cage because it ties the entire frame together so the truck doesn’t tear its self apart in the dirt.

Totally get it, you get it, your client gets it.
rule #1 spend as much money on safety as possible, whatever is leftover goes to performance. Damn this is the ultimate tacoma, just needs a power transplant.

Might kick around some work in the front with the LT. Maybe a cross brace or tie in with those inner fender hotcakes everyone is gonna want.

I also think a lot of my buddies fears come from an incident that happen a few years ago. We had another friend who rolled built ford ranger without a cage. The passenger got hurt and ended up suing the driver. The passenger won the lawsuit and the driver ended up losing his house over the ordeal. I know it sounds crazy but unfortunately these are the times we live in.

You could say my buddy who owns this Taco is even more paranoid because he’s a lawyer but the reality is a $10k cage is cheap insurance not only for your life but for all your assets.

As for the engine we are doing a supercharger with all the goodies to wake up the 4.0 :)

I definitely like the way the cage turned out, that looks clean as is but i can not wait to see the interior buttoned up and that hidden behind the interior panels.

i look at cages both as insurance against injury lawsuits from passengers as well as protection from stupid drivers on the road. I have seen how easily the intrusion bars in the doors cave and how far the B pillar can come in from even a 20mph so anything that keeps other idiots and their vehicle outside of my drivers bubble is very important.

I can't leave anything well enough alone
When welding a really tight fitting cage such as this, can you comment on what is done on the backside/underside of some of the joints? I mean it isn't like you can strategically shift things around to weld the backside first as it goes together. Even with a mirror, or the angle of the MIG tip, or also using a TIG torch, there hast to be inaccessible sections. Even on the tubes that go to the frame, seems reasonable that they may not be weldable all 360 degrees? My only reasonable assumption is that those places don't get welded and the fact that they are all mostly welded makes it strong enough. Any comment from you more knowledgeable folks?

It sure looks good. I'm not in any way suggesting it wasn't done right. Just asking out of curiosity

Back when I did a couple of cages, we would lower the cage in the vehicle before it was welded to the rails below. This would allow for complete 360 welds with good quality. Then jack it back up and finish the structure below.

The secret to being able to weld everything almost 100% is the 2” over sleeve in the rear. This allows me to drop the cage down 2” in the rear and weld everything up. Once it’s welded the cage is pushed back tight against the roof and the over sleeve is welded.
