FJ TRD Centercap Mod for TRD OR Wheels

    Going to bump this tired old thread.

    I want to add some subtle red accents to my 2000 Lunar Mist Prerunner so this looked like a great place to start. Will probably paint the stock skid plate red also since it really doesn't show too much. Maybe change the boots on my rear 5100's to red also.

    Anyhow, just ordered 5 of the silver caps from Toyotapartsdeal.com. $50.44 shipped.

    After checking half a dozen sites this was the best deal I found.

    They're going on my 17" sport wheels.

    The caps came in the other day and I snapped them on right away. They seemed to fit okay but it I thought they could fit a little better. It was like they didn't really snap snap in place, almost like they were pushing back a little, if that makes sense.

    So, I took one of the wheels off and took a closer looks at what was going on. It appeared that the tabs on the cap weren't quite seating in the detent in the wheel.

    What I did was file the end of the tabs so they were less of a "wedge" and more rounded on the ends. This seemed to help quite a bit. When I put them back on they snapped in with a bit more positive lock and no push back.

    Oh!! Huge props to ProtoJ who mentioned using a paint can opener to get the old caps off. That was genius!

    I did this mod last summer, I used my belt sander turned upside down in my vise to cut down the back of the caps. I marked them with a sharpie first.

    Just came across this mod and ordered a set of these caps for my Taco. Also, for those interested, TVDVinylDecals.com has colored insert letters for these caps! I ordered a set of dark blue so it matches my truck.

    Inside bulbs and fashioned a hose to keep AC drain off the frame rail
    So did you ever find out if they fit a 3rd Gen? I have a 2020 TRD Sport with 17" stock wheels.
