Flare Ups

I recently got my 2017 Tacoma and notice that every time I drive it after it has been sitting for a few hours (usually in morning to work) the engine always flares (by flares i mean revs really high on its own) in the first minute of driving. Then it doesn't happen again till the next morning.

Anyone ever experience this or something similar? Is it normal?

How high are you talking about in rpm's? Mine runs at a higher rpm until it gets to operating temp.

 

So ill be driving normal say 20 mph then all the sudden when I'm pressing gas it flares up to about 4,000 then comes back down (whole thing lasts about 2 seconds). Then it wont happen again till next morning, same exact thing.

 

That doesn't sound normal, I would take it in to get checked

 

trans fluid level + tsb

 

transmission shifting from 2nd to 3rd , or 1st to 2nd

 

Sounds like a shift flare to me. There should be some TSBs out to fix it on the earlier trucks but if yours is new....maybe low transfluid.

 

You probably bought an early year 2017 that was manufactured prior to November 2016, and you have a pre-Rev 1 ECU. Take it to the dealer, have them apply the Rev 1 ECU/TCU maps per the below TSB and it will be resolved.

Doesn't sound normal unless you are really pressing hard on gas. I'd get it checked out, just to be sure. Around 20mph engine is pretty bogged down in higher gear, so if you are pressing hard on gas I can see it revving quite a bit higher when it downshifts, but that's not what I'm reading here. Maybe a video would help, otherwise just take it in and have the dealer have a look. Good luck OP!

Hey Noah !!

There is some great advice in the above posts .
I am not saying your fluid is low , but I suggest having a fluid level check performed by a reputable dealer .
Along with a fluid level check , I suggest having the dealer run a full diagnostic using the Techstream .
If the trans is flaring between 1st and 2nd gear , make sure your truck isnt effected by the technical service bulletin listed above .
You have a good warranty and hope things are resolved properly .

OP, can you confirm your truck's manufacture date and which plant it is from?

 

I call it the lunge, I hear all Toyota's do it. It stopped after they did the tsb but now it's starting to do it again.

 

He didn't say it went faster, just that it revved higher.

If it's revving between shifts, that's like being in neutral.

 

MY 3rd gen Hemorrhoids always flare up around this time of year. Sounds about normal.
