I was running from the rain in southern/central NV yesterday (if the rain hit the road I was on was going to turn to vaseline in a hurry), and this happened.

Can't see it but the slice in the top of the tire is about 1" long (not in the sidewall). Tires have 12K mi on them. Poor tire was flatter than a flitter!

I really don't want to buy all new tires but not sure I trust a repair on that. Shopping around discount tire now. And of course I don't have warranty on the tire from the dealership.

Thoughts? (at least I got to remember how to use a handyman jack, and I included a photo of the spot I was at before I decided to beat feet)upload_2019-6-17_8-13-34.jpg

I'd look on FB Marketplace for takeoffs. Might be able to get two or four for a little more than the price of a new tire.

Did you crease your tailgate with the Hi-Lift?

Hate that! I wouldn't trust a repair on anything that long, looks like you're in for at least one tire. Last time I had a sidewall destroyed I went for 2 tires.

If they say they can fix the tire, I would let them and see what happens. You may want to switch it out with the spare.

Good points about the FB market place, craigslist and swapping with the spare! Thanks. No crease, a tiny little scuff on the bumper.

    If you:
    1) Can't salvage or don't wish to risk it.
    2) Like your tires
    3) Trying to minimize cost
    4) Spare is an exact match to four on ground

    Then consider:
    1) Having the spare tire mounted on the TRD rim.
    2) Purchase a new factory matching tire.
    3) Have new tire on damaged tire rim placed opposite tire completed in #1.
    4) Have used tire from TRD rim mounted on spare rim.
This allows for pairs of 2 new and 2 used to be rotated and wear evenly.

E rated tire. E rated duratracs have been awesome for me

I agree with this, I have seen several sets of take off tires asking for $100 for all four.

They ride rough as hell on such a light truck though, unfortunately

How many miles on the truck? If it’s within the basic warranty period, they’ll replace it.

load ratings have nothing to do with being more puncture resistant.

I got rid of my OE OR tires at 1,000 miles. Discount Tire gave me $200 for all four used tires towards a set of General ATXs.

The issue I have with most of the tires automakers put on trucks, is that cost, fuel economy and quiet on-road handling trump everything else. IMO those tires are put on for the truck to test drive well and drive it off the lot, that’s it.

BTW, my Discount Tire has 4 lightly used OE Tacoma OR tires it is looking to sell...

This is true. Although it does seem to correlate that most C/E rated tires are just beefier in general.

My E rated ST Maxx ride quite well, but I have def heard the above about the duratracs specifically.

    Easy there.

The jack is well outboard of the hitch area. I can't tell what part the jack is on, but it certainly isn't the hitch or chain slots.

I think the chain rings and the hitch are the only thing solid-ish to jack up from. Pretty much just plastic outboard of that.

I think it is on the metal part on the underside.
