    Hi everyone.
I'm new to the forum and hoping you can help clear up my confusion.
I own a 4 cylinder 2001 Tacoma 4x4 extra cab with manual transmission and would like to know if it can be flat- or dinghy--towed behind our motor home. I see a lot of warnings against this but am wondering if they relate to vehicles with automatic transmission? Is it possible to flat tow my vehicle with a manual transmission or do such warnings relate to my vehicle also?
    Thx
    Andy

The only way to flat tow a tacoma is to disconnect the rear drive shaft.

There's few vehicles that can lubricate the drivetrain properly while the output shaft is spinning.

Even if you left the truck idling it could still cause damage. I've seen it on other Toyota models.

Hello again. Sorry to revisit this, but I want to make sure I'm thorough and don't make a mess of this. So, if I disconnect the main drive shaft (four nuts and bolts) from the rear differential it should be good to flat tow? Or, since it's a 4x4 do I also need to similarly disconnect the front drive shaft (another four nuts and bolts) from the front differential? Again, sorry to bug you but I really need to find a solution to enable flat towing of this vehicle for a long road trip.

Yes, four nuts/bolts on the rear diff. Don't forget to use a paint pen to mark the drive shaft and diff flange so it's goes back together the way it came apart. Front is already disconnected via the diff disconnect for 2 or 4wd.

Thank you, Jowett, for clarifying this. Very happy to hear I'll be able to flat-tow the truck with just this one easy disconnect.

    Thanks again!.
